Large oil painting on canvas by Louis Devedeux (1820-1874) depicting Diana Goddess of the Hunt surrounded by her servants in a forest.
Oil on canvas, 115 x 148 cm within a large golden frame. Signed lower left.
Louis Devedeux was born in Clermont-Ferrand in 1820; he studied starting in 1836 at the school of fine arts in Paris where he was a pupil of Paul Delaroche and Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps. In 1838 he exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon and subsequently also exhibited in Hamburg and Vienna. A painting depicting "A slave market in Asia Minor" was exhibited in 1867 at the Paris Salon and later became part of the collection of Napoleon III of France.
