“One has to do a lot of sketches in order to store in mind as many natural memories as possible. These are the memories that we recite, so to speak, when we are looking for a composition. So, the more memories we have, the more freely we can imagine, sure that we are not going outside of what is possible and only combining, constricting, arranging things seen. »

This delicate pastel is rich of several notes of color arranged both for the pleasure of the painter and for the precise memory of the moment spent in the open air. Working on the reserve of the blue paper allows the artist to give the feeling of the air which circulates through this landscape and which animates the trees, plants and clouds.

One would imagine the painter on the motif, with his box of pastels at hand, choosing here and there the most appropriate color to capture, on the sheet, the harmony that nature creates spontaneously.

Born in Avallon, in the French department of Yonne, Ernest Quost has had a lifelong taste for green countryside, pastures lined with poplars and willows, goat herders sitting on the edge of the embankment, village children bathing in the mare, country festivals in the pariries.
From his master, Horace Aumont, he knew how to paint with love these flowers which were around the end of the last century his greatest claim to glory. Van Gogh is said to have visited his Parisian studio on rue de Dunkerque and he mentions, in his letters to Théo, the “roses of good old Quost”.
