Eugene Forel (1858-1938) small landscape with houses, oil on wood signed lower left, dimensions 18cm by 14cm excluding frame Eugène Forel (1858-1938) is a painter and watercolorist born in Talence having contributed to the circles of Girondin painters and to the development of landscape painting around Bordeaux. He was the founding president of the Society of Girondin Artists with Jean Drouyn and participated in the creation of the Atelier, communities of painters who regularly organized exhibitions. He is also an art critic under the name Pierre Morisse and writes notably for La liberté du Sud-Ouest. His work represents the landscapes of Gironde, the Basque Country, and the Pyrenees. He is one of those artists who largely participated in the development of landscape painting in the South West at the end of the 19th century. The artist's compositions were perceived at the time as conscientious, rigorous, showing fine craftsmanship.
