Saunier was a famous Parisian cabinetmaker under Louis XVI. Coming from a family of cabinetmakers, Saunier began his career in the family workshop with his father Jean-Charles, rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, opposite rue Saint-Nicolas. He succeeded him in 1765 and immediately recorded his master's degrees - which he obtained in 1752, at the age of seventeen. After taking over the workshop, his reputation quickly spread not only in France but also abroad. He worked for the merchant Daguerre, whose clients included major English collectors like Lord Spencer. Because of his particular qualities, he was considered one of the best cabinetmakers under Louis XVI. For his furniture, Saunier preferred solid wood, inlaid with simple fillets. He used mahogany extensively, followed by rosewood and satinwood. Saunier shows a preference for contrasts, which is reflected in the borders of amaranth or ebony fillets with bronze rods, which he always uses with restraint. Inv. no. 4,507 €9,800
