The Goryeo dynasty was founded in 918 by general Wang Geon. It prospered thanks to cultural advances such as the invention of Hangul under King Sejong. However, it also experienced internal conflicts and external invasions, notably the Mongol invasions in the 13th century. The dynasty came to an end in 1392, replaced by the Joseon dynasty. Its cultural and linguistic heritage persists to this day in Korea.
