Andrée Karpelès (Paris, 1885 - Grasse, 1956)

Andrée Karpelès (Paris, 1885 - Grasse, 1956) is an important figure in the promotion of contemporary Indian art on the French scene. A childhood, spent between Calcutta and Paris, opens the doors of India to her and her sister Suzanne, future Indianist, a taste for South Asia. Suzanne Karpelès (1890-1968) turned more towards Cambodia and entered the French School of the Far East in 1922, before becoming curator of the Royal Library of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. Andrée Karpelès, meanwhile, borrows an artistic career and strives from its beginnings to represent landscapes and scenes of Indian daily life. From 1906, she exhibited almost every year at the Salon national des beaux-arts, the Salon d'automne and the Salon des indépendants where several of her works were acquired by the State. In 1908, during the International Industrial Exhibition in Toulouse, she presented an oil on canvas entitled Sur la Terrasse. Indes, in the Quai Branly Museum - Jacques Chirac. In 1910, she made a trip around India which gave rise, on her return, to her first private exhibition at the gallery of modern artists in Paris. She thus established herself on the French artistic scene as an observer and translator of India.

During her travels, she met the Tagore family in Calcutta and met members of the new school of Bengal painters, especially Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951), leader of the movement. This Bengal School is in opposition to English colonial rule and the Western and academic arts education provided in the government art schools, established by the British Raj in the 1850s. His artists claim to belong to Indian culture and advocate a return to traditional techniques and patterns. Andrée Karpelès' exchanges with the members of this new school, pioneers of Indian modern art, greatly influenced her artistic practice and her outlook on this country. She took a stand in their favour in 1914, on the occasion of the 22nd exhibition of French Orientalist painters at the Grand Palais. Associated with the Indian Society of Oriental Art, she helped exhibit artists from the Bengal School for the first time in Paris, including the brothers Abanindranath and Gaganendranath (1867-1938) Tagore and Nandalal Bose (1882-1966).

In 1920, Andrée Karpelès met the poet and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), with whom she became friends. He invited him two years later to stay at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, Bengal. She teaches painting and woodcut at the Kala-Bhavan, the Department of Fine Arts, alongside several members of the Bengal School. Created by Tagore, the establishment was one of the avant-garde centers of contemporary art in India. It stands out from British schools by giving a prominent place to the teaching of Bengali artistic traditions.
The friendship that Andrée Karpelès maintained with the Tagore continued in 1930, when she organized the arrival of Rabindranath Tagore in France for the first exhibition of the poet at the Galerie Pigalle.

From 1920, Andrée Karpelès worked as an illustrator and translator for Bossard editions, then renowned in the French Indianist milieu. She mainly translates and illustrates Indian literary texts for the two Orientalist collections of the editions, the Classics of the Orient and the Small Orientalist Collection.

Along with her husband Carl Adalrik Högman (1874-1958), she founded the Chitra publications, the first of which, India and Her Soul: Writings of the Great Thinkers of Contemporary India, was published in 1928 in the Feuilles de l'Inde collection. It testifies to the desire of the editions to give voice to a political and contemporary India by involving several Indian authors. Following this first book, the Chitra publications publish mainly Indian tales, written by Rabindranath and Abanindranath Tagore, thus positioning themselves as an important reference for the French readers of the two authors.
