The clasp is composed of enamel plaques within a silver gilt dogs tooth setting and was made in the 17th century.
The three plaques are decorated in grisaille enamels, they depict; Saint Luke with his bull, Saint Matthew with an angel and a putto clutching a skull (a popular Memento Mori representation of the period).
The book is a German Lutheran New Testament Bible dated 1845.
The velvet binding is contemporary with the manufacture of the book.
The book and clasp remain in fine condition, the spine of the binding has torn and would benefit from gentle conservation.
