We find on the back of the painting the indication: At the café Montparnasse 1939 Pierre de Belay 37, ruefroidvaux Paris XVI.
Painting representing Paul Fort and his acolytes at the Montparnasse café. Pierre de Belay liked to paint his friend Paul Fort in his paintings, friend of the latter but also French dramatic poet from 1872 to 1960, author of poetic works brought together in French ballads.
His dynamic, brightly colored, highly structured painting appears to everyone as fundamentally modern. He created the trellis technique, a crisscrossing of lines which gives a certain depth to these works.
This technique is influenced by engraving which has been practiced since 1926.
He exhibited at the Indépendants, at the Salon d'Automne and at the Tuileries. His works are kept in many French museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, Brest, the Eugène Boudin museum in Honfleur, the Montmartre museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes, as well as in Belgium, in Switzerland in Geneva, in the United States in San Francisco, etc.
