A "Marriage Plate" porcelain plate with grisaille decoration of an allegorical wedding scene, for the Dutch export.
CHINA XVIIIE
Qianlong period (1736-1795)
Diameter : 22,8cm

The scene, playing under an archway, is richly decorated with musicians, as well as numerous gods including Venus and Juno. A phrase above the archway "SEMPER AMOR POR TE FIRMISSIMUS ATQUE FIDELIS" symbolises the marriage vow.
On either side of the scene, the columns bear the coats of arms of Johan van Gergen van der Gijp and Elisabeth Arnaudina van Beaumont Cornelis (the bride and groom).
The wedding depicted here took place in 1736, although this model could be dated to the Yongzheng period for example for a similar model with the arms of Nicholas Geelvinck and Johanna Jacoba Graafland (and the earliest known model of this decoration), the date of the wedding here facilitates dating the plate to the early Qianlong period.

For an identical model:
- British Museum (Franks.591)
- Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire de Bruxelles (Jorg, 1989, n. 78)

A professionally restored break on the wing.
