Bronze subject representing a deer and a doe signed on the terrace PJ MÊNE Pierre Jules Mêne is a French animal sculptor born in Paris on March 25, 1810 and died on May 21, 1879 in the 10th arrondissement. The most famous animal sculptor after Barry was born to a father who was a metal turner for whom he began working. He made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1838 and quickly became popular with his bronze representing a dog strangling a fox. The horse plays a dominant role but there are scenes of hunting deer and does, dogs, birds, farmyard animals and only a few wild animals. He opened his own foundry in 1837 to produce his bronzes.
