"Concarneau By Janssaud"
Style: Breton School 1930s Condition: Excellent Technique: Pastel on cardboard Other: Signed lower left Height: 30 cm Width: 39 cm Dimensions with frame: 41/47 cm Mathurin Janssaud (1857-1940) is a born French artist on March 29, 1857 in Manosque in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Although little is known about his life, it is known that like many artists of the time, he first went to Paris, but over time he became interested in the scenes of Brittany and in particular the coastal scenes of Concarneau which became its home port. He also belongs to the group of painters attached to this city, “The Concarneau group” alongside other artists such as Alfred Guillou, Théophile Deyrolle, Henri Barnoin, Fernand Le Goût-Gérard etc… In Concarneau, it is the local color of the sea, the setting sun, the stormy sky, the sails, the men struggling or at rest or even the women in costume busy at the market who shape and offer themselves to the artist. Janssaud then shows the public what he likes. In 1906, his poster project was selected to promote the second edition of the Filets Bleus festival in Concarneau, which marked for the artist a perfect integration into local life. In an impeccable technique, Janssaud stands as a master of pastel, an art which he dominates to perfection, both in the drawing of landscapes and characters, and in the mastery of colors and chromatic harmonies. Janssaud Mathurin died on January 27, 1940 in Paris.
