Eugène BAZIN (1799-1866) The death of General Bréa and Captain Mangin, gouache, 11 x 18 cm, signed lower left. On the back inscription: "Assassination of General Bréa and Captain Mangin June 25, 1848 Barrière de Fontainebleau". 19th century frame. Framed dimensions 29 x 34 cm.

General Bréa, accompanied by Captain Mangin, was charged in 1848 with operating against the insurgents on the left bank of the Seine in Paris, he had succeeded in pushing them outside the walls: in the hope of bringing them back by peaceful means , he advanced to parley outside the Fontainebleau barrier, (current Place d'Italie) but he was seized and killed on June 25, 1848.
