"Pair Of Carved Bronze Covered Vases By Pierre Jules Mène Dated 1860"
Hello, I am offering you this exceptional pair of covered vases in sculpted bronze on a marble base. This pair is dated 1860 and signed by Pierre Jules Mène (1810-1879). There is absolutely stunning hunting decor. Pierre Jules Mène: Pierre-Jules Mêne, often spelled Pierre Jules Mène, is a French sculptor born in Paris on March 25, 1810 where he died in the 10th arrondissement on May 20, 1879. He is considered one of the main representatives of sculpture animal culture in the 19th century. He was the father-in-law of the sculptor Auguste Cain (1821-1894), who was his collaborator Pierre-Jules Mêne was born at 84, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine in Paris from the marriage of Dominique Mêne, a metal turner, and Louise Marguerite Kvella. In 1822, Dominique Mêne, having registered with the Meeting of Bronze Manufacturers, created a workshop at 12, rue du Vertbois specializing in the manufacture of chandeliers and torches. The first training of Pierre-Jules, then a young print collector with a particular interest in the works of Horace Vernet, came from his father, then from the wood sculptor René Compaire. Although his first job was modeling subjects for porcelain factories, he nonetheless spent a significant amount of time in the plant garden, from which he brought back sketches and small models of animals. Léon Bonnat, Portrait of Auguste Cain, Avignon, Petit Palais museum. Pierre-Jules Mêne married Hortense-Caroline Monnereau in 18322. He settled at 7, rue du Faubourg-du-Temple then, just like Antoine-Louis Barye would do a year after him, it was in 1838 — the year from his first participation in the Paris Salon - that he created his own foundry workshop which he personally directed until 18774. This will be described as a meeting place for artists and writers, frequented among others by Alexandre Dumas. He worked there himself with casting and carving to publish his own works to which those of his son-in-law, Auguste Cain, would later be added. He produced numerous animal sculptures, particularly popular during the Second Empire, such as those of Antoine-Louis Barye, Auguste Caïn, Pierre Louis Rouillard. Mêne specializes in small bronzes and does not produce work for public statuary. His animal subjects enjoy great popular success and are the subject of numerous editions. Exclusive publisher of his works, the perfection of his productions is recognized and he proves to be, with Barye, as the one whose success is the most constant, and this over the longest period. Mêne appears to be one of the best wax practitioners of his time. After the deaths of Pierre Jules-Mêne and that of Auguste Cain, the Susse foundry bought the reproduction rights to his work and continued publishing it. This one, however, due to its proliferation, suffers from a devaluing prejudice compared to other authors, because a huge number of forgeries of this artist circulate in the art market. A bust portrait of Pierre-Jules Mêne, executed in 1850 by the sculptor Jean-Pierre Dantan, is kept in Paris at the Carnavalet museum Exhibitions Paris Salon from 1838 to 1879.
