Extremely rare piece
Momoyama - early Edo period (1590-1600),
Embossed and riveted iron. Rust patina
This distinctive helmet is called "tori-kabuto" (bird helmet), and is used as a headdress for dances at the imperial Bugaku court. The tori-kabuto evokes an oshidori, a royal duck whose magnificent plumage represents a phoenix, a mythical bird considered immortal.
The helmet is made of a combination of stamped iron plates. The plates are joined at a central ridge to represent the bird with its pointed beak and slender plumage behind.
