all framed by a rich border with foliage decoration flanked by parrots, squirrels and dogs surrounding a cartouche in its center.
17th century Flanders
Dimensions: 300 x 265cm.
History: Our Mercury and Argus tapestry is part of the series of hangings from Ovid's metamorphoses, probably based on a cartoon by Jacob Jordaens (1563/1678).
The episode of Ovid's Metamorphoses highlights Argus charged by Juno with monitoring the nymph Io, transformed into a heifer by her lover Jupiter. Sent by Jupiter, Mercury puts the shepherd to sleep with the sound of his flute to deliver Lo.
