Suzani Embroidery Uzbekistan Circa 1880
Old Suzani. The nuptial gift that young Usbek women gave to their husbands on their wedding day. In Ousbek society, a woman's status and the respect she was shown often depended on her skills as a weaver. The first (and most important) proof of her abilities in this area was given on her wedding day, when the wedding camel was adorned with the embroidery she had made for her trousseau. Additionally, Suzani embroidery was displayed on a window sill to signal that the marriage was consummated.
