RARE Pair of 17th century silver torches They bear the hallmarks of the city of Bayonne Letter Date F circa 1698 By the master goldsmith De Lane Jean They rest on a round foot bordered with large stylized acanthus leaves; this same decoration is deprised on the knot above the foot and under the binet Very beautiful hallmarks under each foot Height 20 cm Weight 963grs To date and after the research of Mr. Clake de Dromantin (whom I thank very sincerely for his work ), only a pair of 17th century candlesticks from Bayonne are known; This one is therefore the second. The first figure in the famous David Weill collection, reproduced lot 71 vol II, sold in 1971. This pair of Flambeaux will be reproduced and referenced in the upcoming work by Mr Dromantin on the Goldsmiths of Bayonne. Very few pieces of goldwork from the 17th century have reached us, and even fewer for the province.
