Roman, 1st - 2nd Century AD.

The ancient intaglio measures 1.2 x 1 cm.

The ring size is a P UK / 7.5 US.

The high carat gold ring is modern.

The cabochon stone is engraved with a shepherd observing his goat foraging at the base of a tree.

Chromium chalcedony (known as Plasma in the ancient world) was widely used in jewellery and seals throughout the Roman Empire. Chromium chalcedony disappeared from use in the ancient world in the 2nd century when the known deposits were mined out.
