Watercolor on paper
15 x 38 cm
Signed lower right: Ruth Mercier
Born in Switzerland to French parents, Ruth Mercier was a pupil of Santalès. She specialized in the representation of landscapes and flowers, using both oil and watercolor techniques. She lived in Cannes in the 1880s, where she associated with the British aristocracy. She also resided in Paris and later in London. She obtained an honorable mention at the Salon des Artises Français in 1885 and a bronze medal in 1900 on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition. She exhibited in London in galleries but also at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor.
The work that we present represents a throw of roses, painted in watercolor, a classic subject perfectly mastered by this artist whose works are quite rare on the market.
