Object description :

"Medieval Amuletic Ring With A Meteorite. English Or French, 13th Century."
A unique medieval amuletic ring set with a meteorite.

English or French, 13th century.

Ring size Q UK / 8 US.

The magical gem measures 0.83 x 0.6cm.

The rub-over setting holds a magnetic stone, most likely a meteorite which would have been worn for its amuletic qualities (and certainly not for its aesthetic appeal) as the back of the setting is open to allow the stone to make direct contact with the wearers skin. The setting of the stone is supported by two open mouthed dragons, between which the gold mount is engraved to represent their fiery breath.

During the Middle Ages, gemstones were often associated with magical and protective properties that they were believed to possess. Gemstones could protect against evil or poisons as well as heightening the individuals’ characteristics and strengths.
