La maison Orchies is a French ceramics factory founded in the late nineteenth century in the town of Orchies, located in the north of France, not far from Valenciennes. Founded around 1886 by Léon Gambier, the pottery factory quickly established itself as a major player in the production of ceramics in the region. It was later integrated into an industrial complex comprising several manufactures, known as Saint-Amand, Hamage and Orchies. This group, which also includes the famous pottery of the Moulin des Loups, has allowed to expand and diversify production.
The ceramics produced in Orchies cover a wide range of utilitarian and decorative objects: vases, pitchers, tableware, figurines, lamps, etc. They are particularly appreciated for their high quality of manufacture and ornamental richness. The influence of the artistic movements of the time is felt in the variety of styles, notably Art Nouveau and Art Deco, which translate into organic forms, stylized floral patterns and soft colors sometimes bright.
An emblematic production of the house is that of the fired sandstones, with spectacular glazing effects, very popular among collectors. These pieces reflect the technical and artistic know-how of the manufacture. Some creations were also made for luxury houses or intended for export.
Orchies ceramics are often recognizable by their distinctive marks. They may bear the inscriptions “Orchies”, “St Amand Orchies”, “Moulin des Loups” or a symbol representing a stylized mill, used as the logo of the manufacture.
Today, the pieces from this manufacture are actively sought after by lovers of decorative arts and collectors of ancient ceramics, both for their historical value and for their aesthetics.
