Superb late 19th century pastel representing waves in the storm crashing on a dike. Spectators can be seen on the dyke who have come to see the breaking waves, in the background a sailing boat is moving out to sea. Superb rendering of the waves and the sky, the colors remained bright and bright. High quality work, tableau vivant, dated 1894 and signed JHL lower left, the whole presented in a blackened wooden frame.
