Object description :

"A Louis XV Flat Back Begère, 18th Century Circa 1750-1755. "
A Louis XV flat-backed Bergère in molded, carved and waxed beech and oak wood. Of quadrangular structure, its imposing flat back is higher than wide; slightly inclined it is nicely violoné of apparent wood where runs a ribbon of vegetation of the most harmonious, topped by a bouquet of flowers in the natural. The armrests provided with cuffs and cheeks are straight with flared hands. The whole is embraced jointly in the lower part of the backrest and in the lateral crosspiece of the belt in withdrawal of the front base, thus forming the famous gallant withdrawal*. The seat is low with a scrolled belt. The whole resting on a short and arched base punctuated with a scroll of foliage in the natural, with a daisy carved on the shoulder. Beautiful harmony of fine and generous sculptures well marked with a delightful decoration perfectly mastered. This shepherdess testifies to the quintessential structural and decorative skills of the mid-eighteenth century carpenters, around 1750-1755. The whole; width and height of the backrest, depth of the seat, the whole embellished with mobile cushions placed on the seat for one and in the hollow of the kidneys for the other, confers to this bergère a beautiful balance halfway between charming grace and comfort. Balance, comfort, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this beautiful epicurean seat. Dimensions: Height: 95.5cm, at the bowl 31cm at the cushion 46cm - Width at the hands 69cm, at the back 58cm - Seat depth 58cm. The tapestry has been completely redone and stretched with an elegant floral damask fabric with shiny gold decorations in satin lampas.  Observations: This seat was formerly restored, the right front end grafted (visible on photograph). Reinforcements of mortises were inserted in the belt avoiding thus a squaring.
* The receding armrests of this shepherd's chair called "to withdraw gallant" allowed the dresses of these ladies to spread without harming the general harmony of their toilet.
