Danaë And The Golden Rain, 17th Century, Jacob Van Loo (1614-1670)?
Oil on wood framed by a carved and gilded wooden frame with gold leaf, the frame is posterior (it is around forty years old).
A very beautyful painting in perfect condition. Late 17th or very early 18th century.
No apparent signature but this painting is very close to another Danaë made by Jacob Van Loo in 1655.

The history:
"Danaé is daughter of the king of Argos, Acrisios, and Eurydice. Her father having been warned by an oracle that he would be a day killed by his daughter's child, he locks Danae up in a bronze tower, so that no one can approach her. But Zeus, in love with the young woman, changes into a shower of gold and crosses her prison to unite him with her. From this divine encounter, Danae gives birth to Perseus. When Acrisios learns of this birth, he locks Danae and the child in a trunk which he leaves at random in the waves. The trunk came out of the waves on the island of Seriphos. Danae suffers the lust of the tyrant Polydectes. Perseus left to fight Medusa, returning from his victorious expedition during which he decapitated the Gorgon, saves Danae by changing the tyrant into a stone statue thanks to the head of Medusa (whose eyes have the power to freeze forever whoever looks at them) Danae then returns with her son to Argos, where she settles down with her mother. His father Acrisios dies accidentally during the games of Larissa by a disc thrown by Perseus".
