Object description :

"Allegory Of Spring With Bacchic Dance. Filippo Lauri (1623-1694)."
Oil on canvas Presented in a 17th century frame in carved and gilded wood Total dimensions: 68 x 87 cm. The frame: 47 x 65 cm This very beautiful painting that we are offering to you was produced in the 17th century by the Roman painter Filippo Lauri. In the midst of the Baroque movement, the artist is known for his mythological scenes, bacchanalia and allegories. Our painting is a fine example of his work, it is an allegory of spring, a garland of flowers is pulled by a little putto, and a dance begins to celebrate the end of winter. *Filippo Lauri, Italian painter (Rome 1623 – id. 1694). Son of the Antwerp painter Balthasar Lauwers, who came to Rome with Paul Bril, he was trained by his father and his brother Francesco, then by his brother-in-law Angelo Caroselli. Especially marked in fact by the manner of PF Mola, he was "the born master of small formats" (H. Voss), with religious or mythological subjects (Apparition of a musical angel to Saint Francis, Rome, GN, Gal. Corsini), finding a clientele in Roman high society (Colonna, Chigi, Pamphili, Pallavicini) and exporting, according to Pascoli, a large number of his works to France, England and Spain. Faithful to a very Flemish meticulousness, he animated certain views of Claude Lorrain with his characters and decorated several Roman palaces with his landscapes (gall. of the Quirinal, 1656-57; villa of the Duke of Parma, near the Porta di S. Pancrazio; ceiling in the Borghese Palace). He only rarely executed large formats (Madonna and Saint, Rome, GN, gal. Corsini). He was one of the picturesque figures of 17th century Rome, eager for social life, experienced in mind games and an assiduous member of the Academy of Saint-Luc (from 1654). Very good state of preservation. Sold with detailed invoice & certificate of expertise.
