"Pair Of Carved, Gilded Mirrors, 'alla Sansovino' Venetian Engraver Active In The 18th Century"
Pair of carved, gilded mirrors, 'alla Sansovino' Venetian engraver active in the 18th century This precious pair of Venetian frames, the work of an eighteenth-century carver, shows itself in all its opulence, carved in high relief with a rich decoration of intertwining flat spirals, festoons of fruit with cherub heads, and entire figures of angels. These are two beautiful works defined as Sansovinesque, or alla Sansovino, named after the famous Italian Renaissance architect and sculptor Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570). On the sides of each frame we find two full-length angels, with faces hinting at a smile and framed by curly hair. Finally, the base of the mirrors is decorated with the face of a winged cherub placed between two garlands decorated with flowers.
