Chez Denys Thierry in Paris, 1675 - Very nice, beautifully bound copy of the first edition in 12mo format of these works by Boileau, published during the author's lifetime, adorned with a frontispiece and 5 engravings, by Pierre Landry by Paillet engraved by Vallet. This copy has been exceptionally enriched with a beautiful engraved portrait of the author, before the letter, placed opposite the frontispiece, i.e. 6 engravings in total. This copy also contains the Epistle to Guilleragues which was added after Cahier L, doubling the pagination from pages 133 to 139; this epistle which is the fifth, is not in the 4vo edition and it has only been added to certain 12vo copies, which is the case here. A copy therefore more than complete!
Superb binding in full red morocco signed Brany, bookbinder active in Paris from 1850, probably a master in the art of making elegant, sober and perfectly executed bindings to give new life to older works from the 17th or 18th century in particular , like a Chambolle-Duru or Hardy. This one is executed in full red morocco with two triple frames of gilt fillets and finials at the corners (decor à la "Du Seuil"), spine with 5 nerves with gilt dotted lines, decorated boxes, title and date in gilt letters, edges entirely golden and golden wheels in tail and head. Pretty gilt lace on the interior counterplates of the binding, with the signature of the binder, marbled paper decoration. Note some very slight rubbing on the jaws, not serious. The binding is very well preserved overall.
Interior in perfect condition absolutely devoid of foxing or stains, very pretty neat edition, decorated with vignettes, headbands and tailpieces quite typical of 17th century books.
