Old oil dating from the middle of the 19th century. Very beautiful seascape depicting the port of Antwerp at dawn. Sun emanating from behind the belfry of the piloting building (Loodswezen) Creation of the painter Henri Adophe Schaep (1826-1870) and dated 1845. Henri Adolphe Schaep or Hendrik Adolf Schaep (January 3, 1826, in Mechelen - June 6, 1870, in Antwerp) was a Belgian painter, draftsman and military officer. Best known for his seascapes but also for his painted landscapes. Schaep was an important representative of the romantic-realist movement in Belgian marine painting. The painter began his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1838. His studies overlapped with those of Egide Linnig, another future painter of marine who had begun his studies at the Academy in 1834. Schaep not only studied art, but simultaneously developed a career as a military officer. This professional career took him to various places: he was a lieutenant in Ghent in 1840, he was based in Antwerp from 1846 to 1849, in 1849 he was in Ostend, in 1855 he was captain in Mechelen, in 1857 he was based in Liège. , in 1861 he returned to Antwerp and in 1862 to Brussels. From the 1840s, Schaep took part in the salons of Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and the provincial capitals of Belgium. He was also recognized as a geologist and paleontologist.
