The origins of this instrument are distant, since it descends from the zither family, and more particularly from the psaltery. The psalteries belong to the instruments of the plucked string family, while the tympanons belong to the struck strings. Curved and leather-trimmed sticks were used to play the dulcimer, the dulcimer is played flat, which is not necessarily true for the psaltery. Eighteenth century dulcimers are very rare today. Many models have been destroyed.
