Japanese Lacquer Compartment Box. Meiji Period.
Lacquered wooden box with gold decoration of lush banana tree and birds, has two flaps in the upper part, one side with 3 small drawers, the flap reveals two small tea rack lids, the other flap discovers a pierced plate for the cigars most likely small chips and wear to the lacquer mainly in protruding parts, visible on photos. Japan, late 19th century.
