18th-century Style Chess Coffee Table
18th-century walnut chess coffee table. Guests would move from room to room with their cushions, playing at this table while kneeling wherever they pleased or wherever the game was set up. The tabletop’s *bec de corbin* (bird's-beak) molding reveals a contrasting chessboard inlay of mahogany and sycamore. Flanking the board are two wide walnut strips for captured pieces, all enhanced by framing friezes. The shaped apron on all four sides is complemented by cabriole legs ending in recessed sabots. The drawer operates via a suspended, dovetail-jointed sliding mechanism. A very rare model in terms of both function and proportions. I am open to offers, as I am moving to a larger space. Delivery is possible but not included in the price.
