César Baldaccini (1921–1998)
Le Pouce, 1988
Rare signed and numbered work by César Baldaccini, produced in collaboration with the renowned Swedish gallery Galleri GKM (Galerie GKM), Malmö, in 1988.
The work consists of a T-shirt featuring César's iconic *Pouce* motif, mounted between two plexiglass panels. Signed and numbered 10/13, it belongs to an exceptionally small edition of thirteen examples.
Historical Context - César and Galleri GKM:
Founded in 1967 by Siwert Bergström, Galleri GKM established itself as an important Scandinavian gallery for international modern and contemporary art, developing close relationships with leading European artists, including César.
In autumn 1988, Galleri GKM organised a major exhibition dedicated to César in Malmö, entitled *Sculptures, Compressions 1958–1988*. The exhibition reflected the gallery's longstanding engagement with the artist and his sculptural practice.
Dated to this same year, the present edition forms part of the documented artistic collaboration between César and Galleri GKM, illustrating the artist's exploration of his sculptural imagery beyond traditional materials and formats.
The *Pouce*, first conceived in 1965, became one of César's most recognisable creations. By translating this emblematic sculptural form onto a textile support, the artist's imagery enters a different material context while retaining its connection to his broader artistic vocabulary.
