ROCKY COAST AT DUSK
Painted after 1918
Oil on canvas, 33 x 41 cm signed lower left: Jean Lafon
Jean Lafon was born into a family of artists. He was the son of the history and church painter François Lafon and grandson of the history painter Jacques-Emile Lafon. To avoid being confused with his father, he called himself Keuleyan-Lafon or just Keuleyan and worked exclusively as a landscape and marine painter. He specialized in picturesque sunsets by the sea and coasts in the moonlight. His paintings hang in French museums and are regularly traded. They often depict the bizarre coast near
Agay on the Côte d'Azur, as in the present work. After the First World War and the death of his father, the artist signed his paintings Jean Lafon again. The present picture was probably painted in the 1920's.
