La pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Ivoire \u00e0 Commercy, le second en France apr\u00e8s celui de Dieppe, n\u2019est pas li\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019existence d\u2019un centre de production local, mais \u00e0 la constitution d\u2019une collection, r\u00e9unie par le docteur Albert Guillaume Boyer. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u00e9gu\u00e9e \u00e0 la ville de Commercy en 1909 afin de constituer le fonds initial d\u2019un futur mus\u00e9e. La structure du b\u00e2timent initial et certains \u00e9l\u00e9ments d\u00e9coratifs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 conserv\u00e9s. L\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9vation du b\u00e2timent et son plan sont fortement inspir\u00e9s du Pavillon Royal \u00e9difi\u00e9, entre 1747 et 1754, par Emmanuel H\u00e9r\u00e9 dans le parc du ch\u00e2teau de Commercy, et aujourd\u2019hui disparu. L\u2019int\u00e9rieur du b\u00e2timent, en revanche, pr\u00e9sente les caract\u00e9ristiques d\u2019une architecture Art D\u00e9co, en vogue dans les ann\u00e9es 1920-1930.<\/p>\n<p>Le Mus\u00e9e comprend deux espaces d\u2019exposition permanente, l\u2019un consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019ivoire et l\u2019autre \u00e0 la c\u00e9ramique. Dans chacun d\u2019eux, certaines oeuvres sont mises en valeur et pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es au centre de la pi\u00e8ce dans des vitrines th\u00e9matiques ; tandis qu\u2019en p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie d\u2019autres vitrines offrent des informations compl\u00e9mentaires, notamment techniques ou historiques. C\u2019est un mat\u00e9riau assez facile \u00e0 travailler. Les principales limites sont li\u00e9es au diam\u00e8tre de la d\u00e9fense, \u00e0 sa courbure et \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019une partie creuse, la cavit\u00e9 pulpaire. Ces trois caract\u00e9ristiques structurelles d\u00e9finissent la forme et les dimensions de l\u2019oeuvre \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser.<\/p>\n<p>La pr\u00e9ciosit\u00e9 du mat\u00e9riau oblige l\u2019ivoirier \u00e0 exploiter au mieux la mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re dont il dispose, afin d\u2019en limiter la perte. L\u2019ivoire est sensible aux variations de temp\u00e9rature et d\u2019humidit\u00e9 et doit \u00eatre conserv\u00e9 dans un milieu climatique stable. L\u2019ivoirier d\u00e9grossit ensuite le morceau d\u2019ivoire brut afin d\u2019esquisser la forme g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l\u2019objet qu\u2019il souhaite r\u00e9aliser, il s\u2019agit de l\u2019\u00e9bauchage.<\/p>\n<p>La taille est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par l\u2019enl\u00e8vement minutieux de mati\u00e8re. Les outils utilis\u00e9s pour travailler l\u2019ivoire proc\u00e8dent essentiellement par usure de la mati\u00e8re, et non par percussion, afin de ne pas provoquer de fissures. Le percement permet d\u2019accentuer la profondeur des reliefs. Cependant, pour des raisons esth\u00e9tiques, une patine est parfois appliqu\u00e9e afin de colorer artificiellement l\u2019objet, notamment en Orient. Les moyens les plus couramment utilis\u00e9s consistent \u00e0 appliquer des d\u00e9coctions de th\u00e9 sur l\u2019objet ou \u00e0 le laisser au contact des fum\u00e9es d\u2019opium.<\/p>\n<p>Le fa\u00e7onnage peut \u00e9galement \u00eatre effectu\u00e9 m\u00e9caniquement. Le tour \u00e0 ivoirier est cr\u00e9\u00e9 durant la seconde moiti\u00e9 du XVIe si\u00e8cle. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un instrument assez rare et co\u00fbteux qui permet la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019objets aux formes arrondies et spiral\u00e9es. Un tour \u00e0 ivoire est expos\u00e9 dans le hall du Mus\u00e9e. Cependant, les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de ces mat\u00e9riaux sont sensiblement diff\u00e9rentes de celles de l\u2019ivoire qui demeure un mat\u00e9riau irrempla\u00e7able, en particulier pour la restauration d\u2019oeuvres anciennes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ivoire et objets religieux<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De par sa couleur et sa pr\u00e9ciosit\u00e9, il a souvent \u00e9t\u00e9 employ\u00e9 pour la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments religieux. Sa pr\u00e9sence sur des crosses, des autels portatifs ou des statuettes de saints, renforce le prestige et le luxe de ces objets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imitation d\u2019oeuvres d\u2019art<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ivoire est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9 pour l\u2019ex\u00e9cution d\u2019objets profanes de petites dimensions qui reproduisent des oeuvres d\u2019art sculpt\u00e9es ou peintes d\u00e9j\u00e0 existantes. L\u2019argile est l\u2019un des mat\u00e9riaux les plus anciens qui ait \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 par l\u2019homme.<br \/>\nPr\u00e9sente en abondance dans la nature, elle peut \u00eatre fa\u00e7onn\u00e9e tr\u00e8s facilement, sans outils, d\u00e8s lors qu\u2019elle est m\u00e9lang\u00e9e avec de l\u2019eau.<br \/>\nOutre des ivoires, le legs Boyer comprend \u00e9galement des c\u00e9ramiques, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans une salle, et des armes anciennes, actuellement conserv\u00e9es dans les r\u00e9serves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mise en oeuvre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Avant de pouvoir \u00eatre travaill\u00e9e, l\u2019argile doit \u00eatre successivement press\u00e9e, lav\u00e9e et d\u00e9cant\u00e9e afin de supprimer les impuret\u00e9s et d\u2019obtenir une p\u00e2te homog\u00e8ne. Une fois purifi\u00e9e, l\u2019argile est fa\u00e7onn\u00e9e par modelage, moulage ou tournage.<br \/>\nL\u2019objet est ensuite s\u00e9ch\u00e9 puis subit une cuisson \u00e0 une temp\u00e9rature de 1300 \u00e0 1400\u00b0C. La cuisson est l\u2019une des \u00e9tapes les plus d\u00e9licates, puisqu\u2019elle doit \u00eatre parfaitement contr\u00f4l\u00e9e. Elle prend ensuite le nom \u00ab des Islettes \u00bb, village voisin du Bois d\u2019Epense o\u00f9 habitaient la plupart des ouvriers et des peintres d\u00e9corateurs.<\/p>\n<p>La manufacture est rest\u00e9e de taille modeste jusqu\u2019en 1775 avant de compter plus de 200 ouvriers \u00e0 son \u00e9poque la plus prosp\u00e8re, devenant la plus importante fabrique d\u2019Argonne. Elle ferme ses portes en 1848, concurrenc\u00e9e par la production industrielle de Sarreguemines.<\/p>\n<p>La fa\u00efence constitue le principal type de c\u00e9ramique produit par la manufacture du Bois d\u2019Epense. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une poterie de terre cuite une premi\u00e8re fois, tendre et poreuse, puis rev\u00eatue d\u2019une gla\u00e7ure opacifi\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tain et cuite dans un second temps \u00e0 environ 1000\u00b0C. La technique de la fa\u00efence est n\u00e9e vers le 7\u00e8me si\u00e8cle au Proche Orient. Cr\u00e9e en Chine au cours du 6\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, ce type de c\u00e9ramique est r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 base de kaolin, une argile particuli\u00e8rement blanche, qui supporte des temp\u00e9ratures de cuisson \u00e9lev\u00e9es sans se d\u00e9former.<\/p>\n<p>Durant plusieurs si\u00e8cles, l\u2019Europe va tenter de produire des c\u00e9ramiques imitant la blancheur, la douceur et la translucidit\u00e9 de la porcelaine chinoise, en recouvrant les terres cuites naturellement color\u00e9es par une gla\u00e7ure blanche. Le 17\u00e8me si\u00e8cle est le si\u00e8cle d\u2019or de la c\u00e9ramique.<\/p>\n<p>Des d\u00e9couvertes successives favorisent le d\u00e9veloppement des techniques. Suite \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un gisement de kaolin en Allemagne, la porcelaine est mise au point \u00e0 Meissen en 1710. Une fabrique importante y est cr\u00e9\u00e9e, donnant lieu \u00e0 une abondante production. Pour r\u00e9aliser certains d\u2019entre eux, notamment sur les fa\u00efences, l\u2019utilisation de poncif est souvent n\u00e9cessaire. Le poncif est un dessin, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement r\u00e9alis\u00e9 sur du papier, dont les lignes sont ensuite piqu\u00e9es de trous afin de permettre le report du motif sur une terre cuite gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019emploi d\u2019une poudre color\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Les couleurs utilis\u00e9es proviennent d\u2019oxydes m\u00e9talliques : le bleu est obtenu avec de l\u2019oxyde de cobalt, le vert avec de l\u2019oxyde de cuivre, le violet avec de l\u2019oxyde de mangan\u00e8se et le jaune avec de l\u2019antimoine. Seules ces couleurs supportent une cuisson \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Elles sont donc pos\u00e9es sur la gla\u00e7ure et cuites avec elle. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un d\u00e9cor dit de \u00ab grand feu \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Cette technique est particuli\u00e8rement d\u00e9licate, car elle ne permet aucune retouche. Progressivement, la palette de couleurs s\u2019\u00e9largit. Une seconde technique est mise au point. Elle consiste \u00e0 poser des couleurs plus fragiles sur une gla\u00e7ure d\u00e9j\u00e0 cuite, avant de les soumettre \u00e0 une cuisson moins \u00e9lev\u00e9e.
