Les nombreuses images populaires repr\u00e9sentant ce p\u00e9riple dangereux, les repos pendant le voyage et le retour parlent du p\u00e8re et de la m\u00e8re protecteurs, de l\u2019enfant sage et vertueux. Seul l\u2019\u00c9vangile de Matthieu, \u00e9crit environ 90 ans apr\u00e8s J.-C. la cite en quelques<br \/>\nlignes. Mais il ne dit rien sur son p\u00e9riple et son s\u00e9jour, ce qui conduit les croyants \u00e0 combler ces zones d\u2019ombre. Peu \u00e0 peu, des \u00e9crits \u00e9toffent le r\u00e9cit. L\u2019\u00e9pisode est racont\u00e9 comme un fait authentique. Il nourrit l\u2019imaginaire d\u2019un grand nombre d\u2019auteurs, de peintres, de sculpteurs, d\u2019imagiers<br \/>\net de cin\u00e9astes, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui. M\u00eame si, dans les textes, ils sont accompagn\u00e9s d\u2019autres membres de leur famille, seul ce groupe de quatre personnages, augment\u00e9 parfois d\u2019un ange protecteur ouvrant la route ou d\u2019un b\u0153uf, est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 dans l\u2019imagerie du 19e si\u00e8cle.<br \/>\nLa Sainte Famille marche : des miracles, racont\u00e9s par les Apocryphes ou inspir\u00e9s de l\u00e9gendes pa\u00efennes qui viennent augmenter le r\u00e9cit, ponctuent le voyage. Les images montrent d\u00e9sormais une complicit\u00e9 affectueuse entre le p\u00e8re et le fils qu\u2019il porte dans ses bras. Selon la L\u00e9gende dor\u00e9e, parue vers 1264, J\u00e9sus, Marie et Joseph y restent sept ans puis, H\u00e9rode \u00e9tant mort et le danger \u00e9loign\u00e9, s\u2019en reviennent \u00e0 Nazareth en Galil\u00e9e.
