1887), peinture sur toile<br \/> \u00a9 EPV \/ Christophe Fouin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Issu de la dynastie des Romanov, fils du tsar Alexis Mikha\u00eflovitch (1645-1676) et de Nathalie Narychkine (1651-1694), Pierre Ier\u00a0(1672-1725), vingt ans apr\u00e8s la \u00ab Grande Ambassade \u00bb qui l\u2019a men\u00e9 une premi\u00e8re fois en Europe en 1697-1698, entreprend un nouveau voyage en Occident. Il atteint la France le 21 avril 1717 et y demeure jusqu\u2019au 21 juin suivant. \u00c0 Versailles o\u00f9 il fait \u00e9tape deux fois, il est log\u00e9 au Grand Trianon, du 24 au 26 mai puis du 3 au 11 juin 1717.<\/p>\n<p>Le parcours de l\u2019exposition suit pas \u00e0 pas ce s\u00e9jour qui, pour \u00eatre officiel, n\u2019en est pas moins libre car, force de la nature, impr\u00e9visible et peu fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9tiquette, Pierre Ier\u00a0bouscule le protocole \u00e0 maintes reprises. Sa rencontre avec Louis XV marque notamment les esprits : faisant fi du c\u00e9r\u00e9monial de cour, il prend dans ses bras, en un geste spontan\u00e9, l\u2019enfant roi, tout juste \u00e2g\u00e9 de sept ans. Le tsar visite \u00e9galement la manufacture des Gobelins qui lui inspire la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019une fabrique de tapisseries dans sa nouvelle capitale. D\u00e9couvrant les marchands parisiens tel un simple particulier, il fait provision de livres, d\u2019instruments scientifiques et techniques. En effet, d\u00e8s 1716, il attire \u00e0 la cour de Saint-P\u00e9tersbourg plusieurs ma\u00eetres, parmi lesquels Louis Caravaque (1684-1754), l\u2019architecte Jean-Baptiste Le Blond (1679-1719) et le sculpteur ornemaniste Nicolas Pineau. Lors de son s\u00e9jour en France en 1717, il est portraitur\u00e9 par deux peintres de renom, Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) et Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755).<\/p>\n<p>Souverain guerrier et voyageur, Pierre le Grand parcourt le monde pendant pr\u00e8s de quatre d\u00e9cennies, de la mer Blanche \u00e0 la mer Caspienne, de la Hollande \u00e0 la Moldavie et de l\u2019Angleterre \u00e0 la Perse. Il visite les grands \u00e9tablissements qui font la r\u00e9putation de Paris sous la R\u00e9gence : l\u2019Observatoire, la Manufacture des Gobelins, le Jardin des plantes, la Monnaie des m\u00e9dailles, les acad\u00e9mies, les biblioth\u00e8ques et les cabinets de curiosit\u00e9s.<br \/>\nCette soif de connaissance l\u2019incite \u00e0 acheter des instruments de math\u00e9matiques et d\u2019astronomie. Le 22 d\u00e9cembre 1717, l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie royale des sciences l\u2019\u00e9lit membre honoraire \u00ab hors de tout rang \u00bb, et peu apr\u00e8s sa disparition, Fontenelle, secr\u00e9taire perp\u00e9tuel, lui rend un vibrant hommage : \u00ab pour porter la puissance d\u2019un \u00c9tat aussi loin qu\u2019elle puisse aller, il faudrait que le ma\u00eetre \u00e9tudi\u00e2t son pays presque en g\u00e9ographe et en physicien, qu\u2019il en conn\u00fbt parfaitement tous les avantages, qu\u2019il en<br \/>\ne\u00fbt l\u2019art de les faire valoir. Lors de son second voyage en Europe, soucieux de d\u00e9velopper un<br \/>\nart pictural nouveau rompant avec l\u2019ic\u00f4ne et fond\u00e9 sur l\u2019\u00e9tude de la perspective et de la nature, il tente d\u2019attirer des artistes fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 sa cour.<br \/>\nLouis Caravaque (1684-1754) est parmi les premiers peintres fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 s\u2019expatrier en Russie ; il y fonde un atelier et forme de nombreux \u00e9l\u00e8ves. Avant son voyage, il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 attir\u00e9 \u00e0 Saint-P\u00e9tersbourg plusieurs architectes europ\u00e9ens, dont Jean-Baptiste Le Blond, recrut\u00e9 comme \u00ab architecte g\u00e9n\u00e9ral \u00bb.<br \/>\nAu printemps 1717, Pierre et sa suite sont impressionn\u00e9s par les monuments de Paris et par les ch\u00e2teaux de Versailles, de Trianon et de Marly. Mais ce sont surtout les trac\u00e9s des jardins \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise, avec leurs jeux d\u2019eau, qui \u00e9merveillent le tsar. D\u00e8s son retour en Russie,<br \/>\nil r\u00e9clame des am\u00e9nagements semblables pour ses demeures de la p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie de P\u00e9tersbourg, et l\u2019on voit s\u2019y \u00e9lever des fontaines, des cascades et des peuples de statues all\u00e9goriques et mythologiques ressemblant \u00e0 ceux du Versailles du Roi-Soleil.<br \/>\nPierre se montre \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s impressionn\u00e9 par l\u2019am\u00e9nagement et la d\u00e9coration int\u00e9rieure des demeures fran\u00e7aises.
