Peintre botaniste, il a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge d\u2019or des sciences naturelles en collaborant avec les plus grands naturalistes de son temps. Il a r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 leur pr\u00e9occupation de classement et d\u2019identification de plantes rapport\u00e9es des quatre continents en les reproduisant \u00e0 l\u2019aquarelle sur de pr\u00e9cieux v\u00e9lins avec une rigueur scientifique et un talent artistiques in\u00e9gal\u00e9s. Paris, mus\u00e9e de la Vie romantique.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Plus de 250 peintures, aquarelles, objets d\u2019art, et v\u00e9lins qui, en raison de leur fragilit\u00e9, seront pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s suivant un accrochage en partie renouvel\u00e9 en trois \u00ab saisons \u00bb proviennent de nombreuses collections publiques fran\u00e7aises (mus\u00e9e du Louvre, mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, mus\u00e9e de Grenoble, mus\u00e9e Fabre de Montpellier\u2026) et des mus\u00e9es de Belgique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parcours de l\u2019exposition<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>PIERRE-JOSEPH REDOUT\u00c9, \u00ab RAPHA\u00cbL DES FLEURS \u00bb<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Pierre-Joseph Redout\u00e9 (1759-1840), n\u00e9 \u00e0 Saint-Hubert dans les Ardennes belges, apprend la peinture dans les Flandres et en Hollande, avant de s\u2019installer en 1783 \u00e0 Paris, o\u00f9 il s\u2019initie \u00e0 l\u2019observation botanique. Son talent d\u2019artiste et sa pr\u00e9cision scientifique sont si vite reconnus qu\u2019il se voit confier en 1788 l\u2019ex\u00e9cution de planches sur v\u00e9lin pour la Collection du roi, dont le N\u00e9erlandais G\u00e9rard Van Spaendonck a la charge. En 1792, il est dessinateur \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie des sciences et illustre les ouvrages des naturalistes les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres. Le centre mondial des sciences naturelles est alors le Jardin du roi, qui devient le Mus\u00e9um d\u2019Histoire naturelle en 1793. Jos\u00e9phine Bonaparte collectionne \u00e0 Malmaison des plantes de tous pays et soutient Redout\u00e9 par ses commandes de recueils. Il est c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, dirige un atelier important, participe au Salon, fr\u00e9quente de nombreux artistes, est nomm\u00e9 ma\u00eetre de dessin du Mus\u00e9um en 1822. Redout\u00e9 s\u2019appuie sur des herbiers pour pr\u00e9ciser ou r\u00e9aliser enti\u00e8rement le dessin du v\u00e9g\u00e9tal. Le sp\u00e9cimen vivant, observ\u00e9 avec une loupe, est indispensable pour la mise en couleurs. Les planches les plus anciennes expos\u00e9es ici sont ex\u00e9cut\u00e9es au lavis d\u2019encre noire, leur commanditaire, L\u2019H\u00e9ritier de Brutelle, craignant \u2013 comme d\u2019autres \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque \u2013 que la mise en couleur ne cache des d\u00e9tails. D\u00e8s 1788, avec son professeur G\u00e9rard Van Spaendonck, Redout\u00e9 s\u2019essaye \u00e0 l\u2019aquarelle sur v\u00e9lin, un parchemin tr\u00e8s fin et tr\u00e8s blanc obtenu \u00e0 partir d\u2019une peau de veau mort-n\u00e9 ou de veau de lait qui met les nuances particuli\u00e8rement en valeur. Un instrument, appel\u00e9 \u00ab roulette \u00bb, permet de juxtaposer tr\u00e8s finement les points incis\u00e9s dans la plaque en m\u00e9tal qui sert ensuite \u00e0 l\u2019impression. Toutes les couleurs sont appliqu\u00e9es simultan\u00e9ment sur la plaque, \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un tampon de chiffon nomm\u00e9 \u00ab\u2009poup\u00e9e\u2009\u00bb. Redout\u00e9 est le premier \u00e0 utiliser pour la botanique ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 qui n\u00e9cessite une grande virtuosit\u00e9. En signant sur un tableau \u00ab\u2009dessinateur de sa manufacture d\u2019\u00e9toffes de soie &amp; de broderies\u2009\u00bb, Bony montre que la peinture \u00e0 l\u2019huile n\u2019est pour lui qu\u2019une pratique n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 la ma\u00eetrise de son m\u00e9tier. Pourtant, Saint-Jean, artiste de la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration suivante, s\u2019\u00e9mancipe de la Fabrique. Il ne devient pas professeur de peinture de fleurs \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole des beaux-arts, se consacrant exclusivement \u00e0 la peinture de chevalet pour la client\u00e8le aristocratique de l\u2019Europe enti\u00e8re. Les mod\u00e8les issus du dessin botanique pr\u00e9cis et descriptif deviennent d\u00e8s lors des tableaux, des papiers peints ou des tissus se r\u00e9pondant les uns les autres dans une m\u00eame profusion virtuose.
