Il l\u2019a l\u00e9gu\u00e9 en 1884 \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de France avec son ch\u00e2teau de Chantilly et l\u2019ensemble de ses collections de tableaux, de livres pr\u00e9cieux et d\u2019objets d\u2019art pour former le mus\u00e9e Cond\u00e9. Selon les volont\u00e9s du donateur, ses collections ne peuvent \u00eatre pr\u00eat\u00e9es hors de Chantilly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Une des collections de dessins les plus importantes au monde<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le cabinet des dessins du mus\u00e9e Cond\u00e9 est remarquable par ses nombreuses feuilles de ma\u00eetres de la Renaissance italienne, un ensemble unique au monde de portraits dessin\u00e9s du xvie si\u00e8cle fran\u00e7ais, et de nombreux dessins orientalistes. Apr\u00e8s avoir commenc\u00e9 une brillante carri\u00e8re militaire en Alg\u00e9rie et s\u2019\u00eatre illustr\u00e9 lors de la prise de la Smalah d\u2019Abd el-Kader en 1843, le duc d\u2019Aumale voit son avenir se briser lorsque la r\u00e9volution de 1848 chasse du tr\u00f4ne Louis-Philippe ; exil\u00e9 en Angleterre durant 23 ans, il y constitue la majeure partie de sa collection d\u2019arts graphiques.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>En 1851, il rach\u00e8te \u00e0 la vente des biens de son p\u00e8re des dessins majeurs. Il acquiert ses premiers Clouet en 1857 et se passionne entre autres pour le xvie si\u00e8cle. Italien par sa m\u00e8re Marie-Am\u00e9lie de Bourbon-Siciles, il est sensible \u00e0 l\u2019art de la Renaissance italienne et constitue un remarquable ensemble de dessins des plus grands ma\u00eetres. En 1864, Aumale ach\u00e8te \u00e0 la vente apr\u00e8s d\u00e9c\u00e8s de Delacroix l\u2019un des sept carnets de voyage au Maroc en 1832. L\u2019orientalisme est pr\u00e9sent dans la collection du vainqueur de la Smalah d\u2019Abd-el-Kader avec des \u0153uvres de Decamps, Marilhat, Pils, etc., provenant entre autres de la collection du marquis Maison acquise en bloc en 1868.<\/p>\n<p>En 1877, il acquiert en \u00c9cosse 484 portraits \u00e0 l\u2019aquarelle de la famille d\u2019Orl\u00e9ans et des h\u00f4tes du Palais-Royal par Carmontelle, essentiels pour l\u2019\u00e9tude du si\u00e8cle des Lumi\u00e8res. Ce fonds fait de Chantilly le premier mus\u00e9e au monde pour le portrait dessin\u00e9 et peint du xvie si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019estampe \u00e9galement \u00e0 l\u2019honneur<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le cabinet des estampes de Chantilly comprend aujourd\u2019hui plus de 5000 feuilles. La collection est r\u00e9partie entre le fonds principal des portraits historiques (plus de deux mille feuilles), les \u00ab \u0153uvres d\u2019artistes \u00bb (un millier d\u2019estampes) et les s\u00e9ries mineures : topographie, sc\u00e8nes historiques, costumes et gravures r\u00e9alis\u00e9es par la famille royale.<\/p>\n<p>Les portraits historiques du xvie au xixe si\u00e8cle concernent les membres des familles de Bourbon et de BourbonCond\u00e9 ; signalons un \u0153uvre grav\u00e9 presque complet du grand portraitiste du r\u00e8gne de Louis XIV, Robert Nanteuil. Le duc poss\u00e8de \u00e9galement des \u0153uvres des meilleurs portraitistes du xviie si\u00e8cle : Claude Mellan, G\u00e9rard Edelinck, G\u00e9rard Audran. Il ach\u00e8te aussi des gravures de reproduction de ses tableaux. Il recherche les vues des monuments et jardins ayant appartenu aux Orl\u00e9ans ou aux Cond\u00e9, comme le Palais-Royal, Saint-Cloud, Bagnolet, \u00c9couen ou bien s\u00fbr Chantilly, vu par Perelle, les monuments de Paris, Dijon, Nancy et Lyon par Isra\u00ebl Silvestre, et plus de 200 vues de Paris par Marot p\u00e8re et fils.<\/p>\n<p>Aumale recherche les \u0153uvres des meilleurs graveurs de la Renaissance, qu\u2019ils soient allemands comme Albrecht D\u00fcrer (La Petite Passion sur cuivre) ou Martin Schongauer, italiens comme Marc-Antoine Raimondi, le graveur de Rapha\u00ebl, ou fran\u00e7ais comme Jean Duvet. Les Fran\u00e7ais du xviie si\u00e8cle sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s par Abraham Bosse, Jacques Callot (surtout des recueils grav\u00e9s), Claude Gell\u00e9e et Claude Mellan ; les nordiques par 21 gravures de Rembrandt (le grand Robert Dumesnil annote sobrement J.-C. gu\u00e9rissant les malades par Rembrandt, dite La pi\u00e8ce de cent florins, 2e \u00e9tat sur papier Japon : Je ne connais point de plus belle feuille), ainsi que des Ruisdael, Adrien van Ostade, Berghem, Paul Potter, en lien avec l\u2019importante collection de dessins n\u00e9erlandais constitu\u00e9e par le duc.
