Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re (1732-1813)."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"chapeau\">\n<div class=\"centrer \">\n<p><strong>Le mus\u00e9e des Arts d\u00e9coratifs pr\u00e9sente les \u0153uvres de celui qui fut l\u2019un des plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres artisans du <span class=\"caps\">XVIII<\/span><sup class=\"typo_exposants\">e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re, doreur et ciseleur des rois Louis <span class=\"caps\">XV<\/span> et Louis <span class=\"caps\">XVI<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"colonnes_texte intro\">\n<div class=\"centrer\">\n<div class=\"col_principale\">\n<div class=\"intro_texte \">\n<div id=\"h3d41d8\" class=\"pave_h3\">\n<div class=\"contenu_h3\">\n<p>104 objets d\u2019art et 85 dessins et estampes, replacent l\u2019\u0153uvre de Gouthi\u00e8re au c\u0153ur de la cr\u00e9ation ornementale du dernier tiers du <span class=\"caps\">XVIII<\/span><sup class=\"typo_exposants\">e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Cette exposition est le fruit d\u2019une collaboration du mus\u00e9e avec la Frick Collection de New York.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Le projet parisien pr\u00e9sente une version enrichie de l\u2019exposition new yorkaise et offre l\u2019occasion de faire le point sur l\u2019\u0153uvre et la carri\u00e8re du bronzier, sur les attributions souvent g\u00e9n\u00e9reuses dont il fit l\u2019objet autant que sur le r\u00f4le jou\u00e9 par ses principaux commanditaires tel que le duc d\u2019Aumont. Pendules, aigui\u00e8res, vases, pots-pourris, cassolettes, bras de lumi\u00e8re, lustres, tables et consoles, chenets et chemin\u00e9es, colonnes et pi\u00e9destaux sont ainsi enrichis d\u2019ornements finement cisel\u00e9s et dor\u00e9s dont les r\u00e9alisations de Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re comptent parmi les plus somptueuses. The Frick Collection, New York<br \/> \u00a9 Photo Michael Bodycomb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On sait peu de choses sur les d\u00e9buts de Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re si ce n\u2019est qu\u2019il fit son apprentissage aupr\u00e8s du ma\u00eetre doreur Fran\u00e7ois Ceriset et eut la grande chance de travailler t\u00f4t dans sa carri\u00e8re avec des orf\u00e8vres de renom. Parmi eux, Fran\u00e7ois-Thomas Germain, orf\u00e8vre du roi qui le forma \u00e0 la technique de la dorure et de la ciselure sur or et argent. Durant cette p\u00e9riode, Gouthi\u00e8re apprit \u00e0 ma\u00eetriser les multiples \u00e9tapes de la production d\u2019objets en laiton dor\u00e9 et les techniques plus particuli\u00e8rement complexes de la ciselure et de la dorure. Ces processus n\u00e9cessitaient de faire appel \u00e0 un grand nombre d\u2019artisans (dessinateur ou architecte, sculpteur, modeleur, fondeur, tourneur, ciseleur et doreur) et mettaient en \u0153uvre diff\u00e9rents savoir-faire comme la cr\u00e9ation de mod\u00e8les, la soudure de diff\u00e9rents \u00e9l\u00e9ments fondus s\u00e9par\u00e9ment, la manipulation chimique de la dorure ou encore l\u2019assemblage final des ornements. Ces dessins, \u00e9tapes indispensables au processus cr\u00e9atif, montrent \u00e0 la fois l\u2019immense inventivit\u00e9 des ornemanistes et combien ils constituent un r\u00e9pertoire de formes et d\u2019ornements dans lequel Gouthi\u00e8re et ses contemporains puis\u00e8rent abondamment. En 1770, l\u2019architecte Ledoux le choisit pour r\u00e9aliser, d\u2019apr\u00e8s ses dessins, les bronzes d\u2019ameublement du pavillon de Louveciennes \u00e9difi\u00e9 pour la comtesse Du Barry. En travaillant sous la conduite de l\u2019architecte B\u00e9langer qui \u00e9l\u00e8ve et dirige la d\u00e9coration du pavillon de Bagatelle, Gouthi\u00e8re \u0153uvre aussi pour le comte d\u2019Artois, fr\u00e8re du roi Louis <span class=\"caps\">XVI<\/span>. Parmi ces commanditaires le duc d\u2019Aumont joua un r\u00f4le consid\u00e9rable. Grand amateur de pierres dures et de porcelaines asiatiques, Aumont, tout en se faisant am\u00e9nager son h\u00f4tel particulier, aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019h\u00f4tel Crillon place de la Concorde, commanda au bronzier des montures en bronze dor\u00e9 destin\u00e9es \u00e0 mettre en valeur certaines pi\u00e8ces de ses collections, montures dont B\u00e9langer fournit les dessins. Comme souvent lorsque les artistes ne signent que rarement leurs \u0153uvres, certaines attributions se perdent et se brouillent. Certaines pi\u00e8ces de ses contemporains lui furent attribu\u00e9es quand d\u2019autres r\u00e9alis\u00e9es de ses mains furent donn\u00e9es \u00e0 ses concurrents. L\u2019exposition s\u2019attarde justement sur quelques bronziers contemporains qui excell\u00e8rent, chacun \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, \u00e0 ciseler le bronze et \u00e0 employer la dorure au mat. Tout au long du <span class=\"caps\">XIX<\/span><sup class=\"typo_exposants\">e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, il ne cessa d\u2019\u00eatre admir\u00e9 et son \u0153uvre recherch\u00e9e des amateurs, essentiellement fran\u00e7ais et anglais. Ces \u0153uvres sont conserv\u00e9es en France au mus\u00e9e du Louvre, au ch\u00e2teau de Versailles, en Angleterre \u00e0 la Wallace Collection de Londres, aux \u00c9tats Unis \u00e0 la Frick Collection et dans plusieurs collections priv\u00e9es. L\u2019exposition est l\u2019occasion de les faire d\u00e9couvrir et aimer d\u2019un plus grand nombre.<\/p>\n<p>Le choix du mus\u00e9e des Arts d\u00e9coratifs pour rassembler le temps d\u2019une exposition une partie des \u0153uvres produites par Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re n\u2019est pas fortuit. Qui mieux que le mus\u00e9e des Arts d\u00e9coratifs peut offrir une collection de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence en mati\u00e8re d\u2019art d\u00e9coratif fran\u00e7ais<small class=\"fine\">\u00a0<\/small>? Con\u00e7u par ses p\u00e8res fondateurs sur la volont\u00e9 \u00ab<small class=\"fine\">\u00a0<\/small>d\u2019entretenir en France la culture des arts qui poursuivent la r\u00e9alisation du beau dans l\u2019utile<small class=\"fine\">\u00a0<\/small>\u00bb, l\u2019institution compte depuis ses d\u00e9buts d\u2019importantes collections de dessins et d\u2019estampes o\u00f9 l\u2019ornement est roi et surtout une collection d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments en bronze cisel\u00e9 et dor\u00e9 offrant un panorama complet de cette discipline \u00e0 travers les \u00e2ges. Il est donc apparu opportun de d\u00e9velopper ces deux axes dans le cadre de l\u2019exposition parisienne. Une s\u00e9lection de pi\u00e8ces en bronze dor\u00e9, choisies avec pertinence au regard de la production de Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re, sert d\u2019introduction \u00e0 l\u2019exposition et permet d\u2019initier le visiteur \u00e0 cette technique particuli\u00e8re, compos\u00e9e d\u2019un alliage de cuivre et d\u2019\u00e9tain dans des proportions variables, commun\u00e9ment appel\u00e9 bronze mais qui s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 chez Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re \u00eatre plus souvent un alliage de cuivre et de zinc, autrement dit du laiton, alliage plus adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la ciselure, \u00e0 la soudure et \u00e0 la dorure.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 partir de la pi\u00e8ce conserv\u00e9e au mus\u00e9e des Arts d\u00e9coratifs, le bouton de porte-fen\u00eatre provenant du pavillon de Louveciennes de la comtesse Du Barry, chaque \u00e9tape du processus de fabrication est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e, du dessin \u00e0 la pi\u00e8ce finale en passant par l\u2019\u00e9preuve en bois, la cire, le moule, la fonte, la ciselure et la dorure gr\u00e2ce aux talents du sculpteur sur bois Vincent Mouchez et des bronziers Bernard et Ga\u00ebl Deville. Ces \u00e9tapes, composant un processus complexe o\u00f9 intervenaient un dessinateur ou un architecte, un sculpteur, un modeleur, un fondeur, un tourneur, un ciseleur et un doreur \u00e9taient ma\u00eetris\u00e9es par Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re. Sous l\u2019ancien r\u00e9gime, les m\u00e9tiers, organis\u00e9s en communaut\u00e9s de m\u00e9tiers, ind\u00e9pendantes et parfois rivales, \u00e9taient d\u00e9finis selon des statuts juridiques pr\u00e9cis, \u00e9tablissant les droits et obligations de leurs membres. Pour devenir ma\u00eetre dans sa discipline, le futur artisan passait de l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u2019apprenti \u00e0 celui de compagnon, puis pr\u00e9sentait un chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre d\u00e9montrant que le savoir-faire du m\u00e9tier \u00e9tait acquis. Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019apr\u00e8s avoir pr\u00eat\u00e9 serment et acquitt\u00e9 les frais d\u2019accession \u00e0 la ma\u00eetrise, que le jeune ma\u00eetre pouvait s\u2019\u00e9tablir \u00e0 son compte. Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re fut re\u00e7u ma\u00eetre doreur et ciseleur sur tous m\u00e9taux le 13\u00a0avril 1758. Sa virtuosit\u00e9 dans la transformation du m\u00e9tal en v\u00e9ritable \u0153uvre d\u2019art, lui permit d\u2019obtenir le statut d\u2019artiste en la mati\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le processus cr\u00e9atif d\u2019une \u0153uvre en bronze dor\u00e9, le dessin joue un r\u00f4le essentiel, mod\u00e8le indispensable au bronzier dont le savoir-faire va permettre de passer de la deuxi\u00e8me dimension \u00e0 la troisi\u00e8me. Aussi, le mus\u00e9e des Arts d\u00e9coratifs tient-il \u00e0 mettre en avant cette fonction des architectes, sculpteurs et ornemanistes qui travaill\u00e8rent de pr\u00e8s ou de loin avec Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re, dont la production entre en r\u00e9sonance avec son \u0153uvre, permettant de dresser un panorama des mod\u00e8les qui circulaient, de ce style qui d\u00e9laissa les exub\u00e9rances de la rocaille pour une plus grande sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 emprunt\u00e9e au vocabulaire du monde antique. Cette mutation dans les arts d\u00e9coratifs fran\u00e7ais ressentie comme sobre par les uns ou comme rigoureuse par d\u2019autres, Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re l\u2019agr\u00e9menta d\u2019un naturalisme exceptionnel. Un peu plus de 80 dessins ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisis pour mieux mesurer la source \u00e0 laquelle le bronzier pouvait puiser son inspiration, d\u00e9couvrir les ornements \u00e0 la mode et comprendre ce qu\u2019il devait \u00e0 quelques architectes et ornemanistes. Certains anonymes, d\u2019autres d\u00fbs \u00e0 des artistes comme Fran\u00e7ois-Joseph B\u00e9langer, Jean-D\u00e9mosth\u00e8ne Dugourc, Pierre-Adrien P\u00e2ris, Jean-Louis Prieur, Gilles-Paul Cauvet r\u00e9v\u00e8lent ainsi les liens unissant les bronziers aux architectes, aux ornemanistes et \u00e0 leurs commanditaires, tous protagonistes de l\u2019\u00e9volution du d\u00e9cor int\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<p>Enfin comparer une s\u00e9lection de pi\u00e8ces de Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re \u00e0 celles de quelques-uns de ses contemporains a sembl\u00e9 pertinent afin de confirmer ce talent particulier de celui qui se rendit ma\u00eetre des dorures au mat. Ainsi autour de Pierre Gouthi\u00e8re, quelques \u0153uvres de Quentin-Claude Pitoin, Fran\u00e7ois R\u00e9mond, Pierre-Philippe Thomire permettent au visiteur de d\u00e9couvrir d\u2019autres chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre du bronze dor\u00e9, puisant aux m\u00eames sources. Ces artistes, longtemps \u00e9clips\u00e9s par la renomm\u00e9e de Gouthi\u00e8re avaient, pour certains, b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 des difficult\u00e9s financi\u00e8res rencontr\u00e9es par l\u2019artiste au milieu de sa carri\u00e8re, profitant alors de commandes \u00e9manant de l\u2019administration des B\u00e2timents du Roi et de clients priv\u00e9s. Toutefois leur activit\u00e9 restait mal connue. Exercice familier de l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art, la r\u00e9attribution des \u0153uvres rappelle que la mode autant que les connaissances acquises sur un artiste contribuent \u00e0 faire fluctuer le nombre d\u2019\u0153uvres qui lui sont attribu\u00e9es.
