Constitu\u00e9e depuis trois d\u00e9cennies, il s\u2019agit de la plus importante collection priv\u00e9e de dessins fran\u00e7ais du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger. Riche d\u2019\u0153uvres de premier plan de Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Greuze et David&#8230; Cette collection offre aussi une vue d\u2019ensemble de tous les artistes notables de la p\u00e9riode, d\u2019Oudry \u00e0 De Troy, de Natoire \u00e0 Bouchardon, d\u2019Hubert Robert \u00e0 Vincent, toujours \u00e0 leur meilleur.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019exposition offrira au regard du visiteur un panorama exhaustif de la peinture et du dessin fran\u00e7ais de la R\u00e9gence jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la R\u00e9volution enrichi d\u2019un choix raffin\u00e9 de quelques sculptures (de Lemoyne \u00e0 Pajou et Houdon). L\u2019accrochage s\u2019articule autour d\u2019une quinzaine de sections th\u00e9matiques ou monographiques organis\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re chronologique. Une section enti\u00e8re est consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 Fran\u00e7ois Boucher. Vient ensuite un ensemble de nus acad\u00e9miques et \u00e9tudes de t\u00eate, dessin\u00e9s par Coypel, L\u00e9pici\u00e9, Vien&#8230; La section suivante est d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 la peinture d\u2019histoire au milieu du si\u00e8cle repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par Natoire et Carle Van Loo. La visite continue avec des dessins de sculpteurs tels Bouchardon et Pajou. Une autre section monographique est d\u00e9di\u00e9e ensuite \u00e0 Fragonard. Puis, le visiteur d\u00e9couvre les \u00e9vocations de ruines et paysages par Hubert Robert et Joseph Vernet. Horvitz, amateur d\u2019art francophile, a rassembl\u00e9, depuis les ann\u00e9es 1980, une collection exceptionnelle o\u00f9 l\u2019on retrouve des dessins des artistes les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle fran\u00e7ais, de Watteau, Boucher et Fragonard \u00e0 Greuze ou David. Au-del\u00e0, il a su b\u00e2tir un ensemble de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, en s\u2019attachant \u00e0 r\u00e9unir de fa\u00e7on encyclop\u00e9dique des feuilles de tous les autres ma\u00eetres de la p\u00e9riode. Chacune r\u00e9pond \u00e0 des crit\u00e8res raisonn\u00e9s, privil\u00e9giant la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019\u0153uvre, son format, son \u00e9tat de conservation et son caract\u00e8re significatif pour l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art. Apr\u00e8s avoir suivi des \u00e9tudes de sociologie et de psychologie, il devient, de 1974 \u00e0 1980, marchand d\u2019art moderne et contemporain \u00e0 Los Angeles. Puis, il part en Floride rejoindre l\u2019entreprise immobili\u00e8re familiale. Celle-ci est vendue en 1987 et Jeffrey E. Horvitz devient alors investisseur financier priv\u00e9. Il peut ainsi s\u2019adonner pleinement \u00e0 sa passion pour les dessins fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019art du portrait <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Au tournant des XVIIe et XVIIIe si\u00e8cles, \u00e9merge une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de portraitistes exceptionnels qui excellent dans la pr\u00e9sentation de figures \u00e9l\u00e9gantes et majestueuses. Le parti pris de composition \u2013 \u00e0 mi-corps, debout ou assis \u2013 permet de donner au mod\u00e8le un caract\u00e8re officiel ou plus intime. La Bible et les textes de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 ont ainsi \u00e9t\u00e9 les principales sources d\u2019inspiration des peintres d\u2019histoire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le paysage <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1720, les artistes vont davantage \u00e9tudier sur le motif. Cette nouvelle pratique bouleverse le choix des paysages. Les d\u00e9cors de grotesques ou d\u2019arabesques envahissent les murs, tandis que, des costumes aux porcelaines, triomphent partout les chinoiseries, les guirlandes de fleurs et les motifs v\u00e9g\u00e9taux asym\u00e9triques. La diffusion par l\u2019estampe des mod\u00e8les de l\u2019art rocaille fran\u00e7ais donna \u00e0 ce dernier une dimension europ\u00e9enne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Boucher <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019un des artistes les plus dou\u00e9s de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, Boucher (1703-1770) a suivi toutes les \u00e9tapes du parcours acad\u00e9mique, depuis le Grand Prix remport\u00e9 en 1723 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son \u00e9lection \u00e0 la t\u00eate de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie en 1765 et le titre de premier peintre du roi. La sanguine est la technique privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e par ces artistes dont les feuilles les plus abouties ont en commun pr\u00e9cision et s\u00fbret\u00e9 de trait. Certains sculpteurs, tels Bouchardon ou Pajou, dessinateurs hors pair, exposent m\u00eame, avec succ\u00e8s, des dessins autonomes au Salon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jean-Honor\u00e9 Fragonard <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c9l\u00e8ve de Boucher, Fragonard (1732-1806) manifeste tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t un vif int\u00e9r\u00eat pour l\u2019\u00e9tude des ma\u00eetres, italiens et nordiques. De son s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Rome en 1756-1761, il rapporte de magnifiques paysages \u00e0 la sanguine. Ce mouvement am\u00e8ne l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie \u00e0 cr\u00e9er, en 1759, le prix de la t\u00eate d\u2019expression. L\u2019\u00e9tude des passions devient \u00e0 nouveau la base du travail des artistes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La peinture d\u2019histoire \u00e0 la fin du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1760, marqu\u00e9s par les d\u00e9couvertes d\u2019Herculanum et de Pomp\u00e9i, les artistes op\u00e8rent un retour \u00e0 l\u2019Antique. Certains restent attach\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019esth\u00e9tique baroque, mais d\u2019autres cherchent dans ce courant un renouvellement \u00e0 la fois des sujets et des formes.
