Litt\u00e9ralement, cette expression peut se traduire par \u00ab nature immobile \u00bb. Elle est \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine du terme stillevens, qui d\u00e9signe en n\u00e9erlandais actuel une nature morte. Les diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9coles de\u00a0peinture s\u2019y consacrent ; chacune conf\u00e8re aux objets une symbolique propre \u00e0 leur culture. En Hollande, le march\u00e9 de l\u2019art est tr\u00e8s compartiment\u00e9 : des peintres se sp\u00e9cialisent dans la repr\u00e9sentation de bouquets (Jan Bruegel de Velours), d\u2019autres dans le th\u00e8me des tables servies (Peter Claesz)<\/p>\n<p>La France est le grand pays de la nature morte au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle. On multiplie les trompe-l\u2019\u0153il pour l\u2019architecture et les riches d\u00e9cors de fleurs et de fruits. Jean Baptiste Oudry se consacre \u00e0 la repr\u00e9sentation d\u2019animaux morts et vivants. Et surtout, Jean Sim\u00e9on Chardin repr\u00e9sente avec une sensibilit\u00e9 in\u00e9gal\u00e9e la vie silencieuse des objets.
