D\u2019abord limit\u00e9es aux peintures et aux objets pr\u00e9cieux, les d\u00e9couvertes arch\u00e9ologiques de Pomp\u00e9i, portant sur la cit\u00e9 elle-m\u00eame, contribuent au d\u00e9veloppement de nouveaux int\u00e9r\u00eats pour l\u2019urbanisme et l\u2019architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Sous l\u2019impulsion des publications de Fran\u00e7ois Mazois, les architectes fran\u00e7ais, pensionnaires \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie de France \u00e0 Rome, se rendent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement dans la ville, d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1820. Ils y \u00e9laborent leurs travaux acad\u00e9miques, leurs c\u00e9l\u00e8bres \u00ab envois \u00bb de quatri\u00e8me ann\u00e9e, qui repr\u00e9sentent les \u00e9tats actuels de ruines et projettent des restitutions d\u2019\u00e9difices : le premier, F\u00e9lixEmmanuel Callet dresse en 1823 une description extraordinaire du Forum, tandis qu\u2019un si\u00e8cle plus tard &#8211; en 1908 &#8211; L\u00e9on Jaussely en donne une version toute aussi spectaculaire mais plus vivante, rehauss\u00e9e par la pr\u00e9sence fourmillante d\u2019habitants de la cit\u00e9. Sa vision de Pomp\u00e9i tient compte des recherches qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9es par les arch\u00e9ologues, non seulement dans le domaine architectural mais aussi sociologique.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 ces travaux officiels, il faut ajouter les nombreux portefeuilles de relev\u00e9s pomp\u00e9iens que se constituent les visiteurs des lieux. D\u2019innombrables dessins sont ex\u00e9cut\u00e9s puis diffus\u00e9s de main en main afin d\u2019\u00eatre copi\u00e9s par des amis ou des \u00e9l\u00e8ves. Cette pratique \u00e9volue, refl\u00e9tant la tradition h\u00e9rit\u00e9e du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle avec son go\u00fbt du pittoresque, puis l\u2019arriv\u00e9e du romantisme et l\u2019influence du courant historiciste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La peinture pomp\u00e9ienne <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sous l\u2019impulsion des n\u00e9o-grecs, Pomp\u00e9i n\u2019attire plus seulement les architectes mais aussi les peintres et les graveurs qui se prennent de passion pour les peintures pomp\u00e9iennes. Si les architectes comme F\u00e9lix Duban ou Charles Garnier s\u2019\u00e9taient attach\u00e9s \u00e0 reproduire des parois compl\u00e8tes de d\u00e9cor pomp\u00e9ien, les peintres, eux, se plaisent \u00e0 isoler des fresques historiques dont ils restituent l\u2019\u00e9tat de conservation parfois d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9grad\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Comme Gustave Moreau et Jean-Jacques Henner, le graveur Claude-Ferdinand Gaillard restitue la d\u00e9licatesse de ces sc\u00e8nes qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de femmes \u00e0 leur toilette ou d\u2019Adonis bless\u00e9 dans les bras de V\u00e9nus. Expos\u00e9es en 1887 aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, ces aquarelles alors tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9es du public parisien, notamment de jeunes artistes comme Pierre Gusman, \u00e9taient depuis lors tomb\u00e9es dans l\u2019oubli.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est avec ce dernier que se cl\u00f4t cette s\u00e9lection d\u2019\u0153uvres : graveur, dessinateur mais aussi \u00e9crivain, Pierre Gusman s\u2019est surtout rendu c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour son ouvrage \u00e9voquant ses souvenirs de Pomp\u00e9i (Pomp\u00e9i, la ville et ses m\u0153urs, 1899). Il y retrace la vie quotidienne dans la cit\u00e9, \u00e9vocations que l\u2019on retrouve dans ses portraits aquarell\u00e9s, qui, inspir\u00e9s des fresques encore en place, fournissent une sorte de typologie des habitants de la ville. Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s en 1897 \u00e0 Paris, ces aquarelles s\u2019offre \u00e0 nouveau \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte du public.<\/p>\n<p>Ces r\u00e9alisations refl\u00e8tent les \u00e9volutions de l\u2019arch\u00e9ologie, et sont autant de regards sur les enjeux esth\u00e9tiques de l\u2019\u00e9poque.
