L&rsquo;exposition m\u00eale peintures, sculptures, photographies, dessins d&rsquo;architecture, objets d&rsquo;art et bijoux dans un parcours foisonnant et th\u00e9matique construit autour de grandes questions esth\u00e9tiques et sociales qui n&rsquo;ont rien perdu de leur actualit\u00e9 : l&rsquo;art au service de la com\u00e9die au pouvoir, l&rsquo;individu et son image, le go\u00fbt de l&rsquo;objet et du d\u00e9cor, les divertissements nouveaux de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, les grands \u00e9v\u00e8nements artistiques que sont les Salons et les Expositions universelles.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"665\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mwPb87YyFtw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p>Le Second Empire est une p\u00e9riode de mise en sc\u00e8ne de l&rsquo;autorit\u00e9 o\u00f9 Napol\u00e9on III cherche \u00e0 appara\u00eetre comme le digne h\u00e9ritier de son oncle, et l&rsquo;imp\u00e9ratrice Eug\u00e9nie, en parfaite \u00ab premi\u00e8re dame \u00bb, d\u00e9vou\u00e9e aux causes charitables. Install\u00e9s dans des d\u00e9cors h\u00e9rit\u00e9s de la monarchie (Les Tuileries, le ch\u00e2teau de Saint-Cloud) ou sur de nouvelles sc\u00e8nes (le nouveau Louvre, le ch\u00e2teau de Pierrefonds), l&rsquo;Empereur use des multiples \u00e9v\u00e8nements dynastiques ou politiques qui ponctuent son r\u00e8gne pour cimenter l&rsquo;adh\u00e9sion de la population \u00e0 un r\u00e9gime fragile. Face \u00e0 la demande, les artistes perp\u00e9tuent les traditions n\u00e9o-classiques (Ingres, Flandrin), ou innovent, en puisant \u00e0 de nouvelles sources d&rsquo;inspiration, le brio de la peinture anglaise pour Winterhalter ou le souffle du baroque fran\u00e7ais pour Carpeaux. Lewandowski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sous le Second Empire, la vie parisienne bat au rythme des nombreux bals, soir\u00e9es et salons organis\u00e9s par la cour la plus brillante du XIXe si\u00e8cle, et dont plusieurs grandes aquarelles d&rsquo;Eug\u00e8ne Lami ou d&rsquo;Henri Baron gardent le souvenir. La ville de Paris, en perp\u00e9tuel chantier, m\u00e9tamorphos\u00e9e par la sc\u00e9nographie haussmannienne, se fait d\u00e9cor \u00e0 ciel ouvert et une certaine nature, artificielle, envahie l&rsquo;espace urbain. Avec l&rsquo;av\u00e8nement du loisir et de la vill\u00e9giature, de Biarritz \u00e0 Deauville, na\u00eet une Nouvelle peinture, \u00e9voqu\u00e9e dans l&rsquo;exposition par des tableaux de Boudin, Degas, Renoir ou Monet.<\/p>\n<p>Lieu de la reconnaissance officielle ou du scandale, le Salon de peinture et de sculpture est \u00e0 la fois un champ de bataille esth\u00e9tique et un grand march\u00e9 pour le nouveau public bourgeois qui s&rsquo;y presse en nombre. En 1863 Napol\u00e9on III, face aux protestations des artistes rejet\u00e9s par le jury, cr\u00e9e en parall\u00e8le du Salon officiel un \u00ab Salon des refus\u00e9s \u00bb, acte de lib\u00e9ralisation majeur. L&rsquo;exposition \u00e9voque, par un accrochage sur plusieurs rangs tel que pratiqu\u00e9 au XIXe si\u00e8cle, le choc entre les deux Salons, celui de la Naissance de V\u00e9nus de Cabanel et du D\u00e9jeuner sur l&rsquo;herbe de Manet.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;Empire de Napol\u00e9on III se met \u00e9galement en sc\u00e8ne face \u00e0 l&rsquo;Europe lors des Expositions universelles en 1855 et 1867 \u00e0 Paris, o\u00f9 l&rsquo;Empire brille de ses derniers feux. S&rsquo;y affirment l&rsquo;excellence de l&rsquo;industrie d&rsquo;art fran\u00e7aise et l&rsquo;\u00e9clectisme d\u00e9brid\u00e9 des sources d&rsquo;inspiration auxquels puisent les cr\u00e9ateurs.
