Un ensemble d\u2019autographes et de manuscrits permettront de montrer la part th\u00e9orique comme la part sensible prise par l\u2019art antique dans la conception de cet artiste romantique. Le projet du Dictionnaire des beaux-arts, conduit \u00e0 partir de 1857, ann\u00e9e de la r\u00e9ception de Delacroix \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie des beaux-arts et ann\u00e9e de son installation place m\u00e9dailles notamment, du British Museum, des mus\u00e9es fran\u00e7ais, des d\u00e9partements des Antiquit\u00e9s grecques, \u00e9trusques et romaines, des Arts graphiques, des Peintures du Louvre, cette exposition in\u00e9dite offre de pr\u00e9senter un Delacroix moins connu, tout en valorisant les lieux du mus\u00e9e eux m\u00eames, derniers appartement et atelier du grand Br\u00e9jat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Delacroix s\u2019installa rue de F\u00fcrstenberg en 1857 ; il eut la possibilit\u00e9 de faire construire, dans le jardin dont il avait l\u2019usage, un atelier de belles dimensions. Pour son seul agr\u00e9ment, il choisit d\u2019orner la belle fa\u00e7ade sur le jardin, rythm\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019image de celles des demeures n\u00e9oclassiques anglaises, de moulages d\u2019\u0153uvres antiques. Le nouvel acad\u00e9micien, qui s\u2019\u00e9tait form\u00e9 hors du cursus acad\u00e9mique, prit cette nouvelle position tr\u00e8s \u00e0 c\u0153ur et cette \u00e9lection avait renouvel\u00e9 son int\u00e9r\u00eat th\u00e9orique pour l\u2019art antique. Son installation place de F\u00fcrstenberg co\u00efncida avec l\u2019entreprise de la r\u00e9daction d\u2019un Dictionnaire des beauxarts, fond\u00e9 sur les r\u00e9flexions ant\u00e9rieures du Journal et de ses articles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NXf6AbNlx8Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Parcours de l\u2019exposition <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans l\u2019entr\u00e9e <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cette exposition au mus\u00e9e Eug\u00e8ne-Delacroix offre, pour la premi\u00e8re fois, de revenir sur les liens que l\u2019\u0153uvre du grand artiste entretint avec les arts de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Incarnation d\u2019un esprit romantique s\u2019\u00e9tant affranchi des contraintes acad\u00e9miques, il a sembl\u00e9 \u00e0 beaucoup que le peintre avait peu regard\u00e9 l\u2019antique. Il n\u2019en fut rien bien s\u00fbr. Delacroix fut, d\u00e8s ses premi\u00e8res visites au Louvre, un fervent admirateur des \u0153uvres romaines pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es. Elle fut aussi, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son voyage au Maroc, vivante et incarn\u00e9e. Il crut, alors, avoir retrouv\u00e9 intacts les h\u00e9ros de l\u2019art antique, dans leur noblesse et leur hardiesse. C\u2019est par le prisme de l\u2019intime, celui du d\u00e9cor de la fa\u00e7ade de son atelier qu\u2019il fit construire \u00e0 son arriv\u00e9e dans ces lieux, en 1857, que le propos de cette exposition se construit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans le salon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bien que l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 ait captiv\u00e9 Delacroix, le peintre n\u2019alla jamais ni en Italie ni en Gr\u00e8ce. L\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 de Delacroix \u00e9tait mus\u00e9ale et livresque. Ce fut \u00e0 travers les collections du Louvre, du British Museum, de la Biblioth\u00e8que royale qu\u2019il en d\u00e9couvrit les chefsd&rsquo;\u0153uvre. Ce fut aussi gr\u00e2ce aux dessins, gravures, photographies publi\u00e9s de son temps, comme ceux d\u2019Edward Dodwell, de Louis Dupr\u00e9, de Jean-Baptiste Gros, que l\u2019artiste put appr\u00e9cier la richesse et la beaut\u00e9 de l\u2019art antique. En pr\u00e9sentant les sources qui ont nourri l\u2019\u0153uvre de Delacroix, cette exposition explore, au sein de son dernier appartement et atelier, la part insigne que l\u2019art antique tint dans son esprit et sa cr\u00e9ation. Leur richesse et leur diversit\u00e9 lui offrirent la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019un voyage mental et imaginaire que cet homme casanier n\u2019entreprit jamais.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans la biblioth\u00e8que <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 des sources \u00e9crites faisant r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l\u2019antique, Delacroix \u00e9tait \u00e9galement fascin\u00e9 par les preuves tangibles de cette \u00e9poque dont il se sentait l\u2019h\u00e9ritier. En 1825, alors \u00e2g\u00e9 de vingt-sept ans, il r\u00e9alisa un ensemble remarquable de dessins et de lithographies de m\u00e9dailles grecques et romaines, qu\u2019il avait pu observer dans des collections priv\u00e9es, et, peut-\u00eatre, au Cabinet des m\u00e9dailles de la Biblioth\u00e8que royale. Bien avant les d\u00e9couvertes arch\u00e9ologiques du dernier tiers du XIXe si\u00e8cle, ces m\u00e9dailles lui offrirent l\u2019intuition d\u2019une Gr\u00e8ce orientale. Loin de s\u2019abandonner \u00e0 une copie litt\u00e9rale, l\u2019artiste entreprit ici un r\u00e9el travail de composition, arrangeant les objets de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 \u00e9riger leur repr\u00e9sentation en \u0153uvre d\u2019art. Comme il l\u2019\u00e9crivit bien des ann\u00e9es plus tard, il sut \u00ab imiter sans \u00eatre imitateur \u00bb et demeurer fid\u00e8le \u00e0 son expression propre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans l\u2019antichambre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pour tout jeune artiste d\u00e9sireux d\u2019apprendre les rudiments de la peinture et du dessin, l\u2019\u00e9tude d\u2019apr\u00e8s le mod\u00e8le nu \u00e9tait, au XIXe si\u00e8cle, un exercice incontournable. Delacroix s\u2019y exer\u00e7a dans l\u2019atelier de son ma\u00eetre Pierre-Narcisse Gu\u00e9rin ainsi que lors de ses s\u00e9ances de copie au Louvre, remplissant des cahiers entiers de copies de nus antiques. Si leurs proportions id\u00e9ales ainsi que leur fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 anatomique suscitaient l\u2019admiration du peintre, il parvint toutefois \u00e0 les r\u00e9interpr\u00e9ter dans ses propres \u0153uvres, car pour Delacroix, la copie est toujours une source d\u2019inspiration, et non d\u2019imitation. Comme en t\u00e9moigne la spectaculaire \u00c9tude d\u2019homme nu, dite Le Polonais r\u00e9alis\u00e9e vers l\u2019\u00e2ge de vingt ans, le peintre concilia la forme antique du nu tout en lui insufflant une modernit\u00e9 nouvelle, insistant sur la musculature prononc\u00e9e et l\u2019expression singuli\u00e8re du mod\u00e8le.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans l\u2019atelier <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Si la Gr\u00e8ce \u00e9tait pour Delacroix le berceau de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9, elle fut \u00e9galement une nation vivante, en plein tumulte identitaire au d\u00e9but du XIXe si\u00e8cle. Grand lecteur de Byron, Delacroix fut sensible au combat de ses contemporains hell\u00e8nes pour la libert\u00e9 lors de la guerre d\u2019ind\u00e9pendance (1821-1829). Ce furent ces deux aspects d\u2019un seul et m\u00eame pays que l\u2019artiste eut \u00e0 c\u0153ur d\u2019int\u00e9grer dans son \u0153uvre. S\u2019inspirant de la monumentalit\u00e9 des \u0153uvres antiques sans jamais tomber dans l\u2019imitation pure, il livra des compositions qui rendent hommage \u00e0 ce pass\u00e9. Sc\u00e8ne de massacre de Scio (1824) et La Gr\u00e8ce sur les ruines de Missolonghi (1826) associent \u00e0 la fois des variations sur l\u2019art antique et une vision de la Gr\u00e8ce contemporaine.<\/p>\n<p>En janvier 1857, sa r\u00e9cente \u00e9lection \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie des beaux-arts avait renouvel\u00e9 l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de Delacroix pour l\u2019art antique. Ce fut en acad\u00e9micien, enfin, que Delacroix s\u2019installa dans son dernier logement, \u00e0 deux pas de l\u2019Institut. D\u00e8s mars 1857, peu de temps avant de signer son bail, il pensait d\u00e9j\u00e0 au d\u00e9cor de la fa\u00e7ade de son atelier. Il avait port\u00e9 son choix sur des moulages d\u2019antiques, command\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019atelier du Louvre. Le d\u00e9cor choisi pour cette fa\u00e7ade secr\u00e8te, ornant le jardin o\u00f9 le peintre avait plaisir \u00e0 se tenir, trahit la mani\u00e8re dont la pens\u00e9e de Delacroix se construisait, r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e \u00e9galement par ses \u00e9crits. Balan\u00e7ant entre Ath\u00e8nes et Rome, la lutte et l\u2019harmonie, l\u2019instant et l\u2019\u00e9ternit\u00e9, l\u2019incarnation du h\u00e9ros, Th\u00e9s\u00e9e, et le cort\u00e8ge \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9 des Muses, ce d\u00e9cor met en \u00e9vidence l\u2019appr\u00e9hension savante et dialectique que Delacroix eut de l\u2019art antique, entre harmonie et sauvagerie, calme et hardiesse. \u00c0 ses yeux, l\u2019antique n\u2019\u00e9tait pas univoque, comme semblait le proposer la doxa acad\u00e9mique, mais pluriel.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">En savoir
