C\u2019est \u00e0 Lyon, en effet, que fut coul\u00e9e en 1499 la premi\u00e8re m\u00e9daille fran\u00e7aise, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion du passage de Louis XII et de son \u00e9pouse Anne de Bretagne, de retour d\u2019Italie. La ville devient alors un foyer important et attractif pour les graveurs qui y trouvent des commanditaires, particuliers ou soci\u00e9t\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;color: #ff0000\">L<\/span>\u2019art de la m\u00e9daille a cependant un succ\u00e8s limit\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s du plus grand nombre, et ce n\u2019est qu\u2019\u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle qu\u2019elle fait \u00e0 nouveau l\u2019objet d\u2019un int\u00e9r\u00eat grandissant de la part des artistes et du public. La bourgeoisie n\u00e9e de l\u2019industrialisation voit dans la m\u00e9daille un moyen facile de passer \u00e0 la post\u00e9rit\u00e9 et de pourvoir au jeune esprit r\u00e9publicain. Des m\u00e9dailles \u00e0 forte valeur artistique sont notamment \u00e9labor\u00e9es sous l\u2019impulsion d\u2019Hubert Ponscarme, professeur aux Beaux-Arts de Paris. Ce dernier est pass\u00e9 \u00e0 la post\u00e9rit\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa Semeuse (1898), grav\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019origine sur les monnaies de 50 centimes \u00e0 5 francs. Les artistes s\u2019inspirent d\u00e9sormais d\u2019un r\u00e9pertoire th\u00e9matique vari\u00e9 propos\u00e9 par les nouveaux courants artistiques de l\u2019\u00e9poque : Art Nouveau, naturalisme symbolique, n\u00e9o-classicisme et impressionnisme.
