{"id":4109,"date":"2015-10-31T18:22:51","date_gmt":"2015-10-31T17:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.proantic.com\/magazine\/?p=4109"},"modified":"2017-12-15T11:01:32","modified_gmt":"2017-12-15T10:01:32","slug":"florence-portraits-a-la-cour-des-medicis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.proantic.com\/magazine\/florence-portraits-a-la-cour-des-medicis\/","title":{"rendered":"Florence, portraits \u00e0 la cour des medicis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Au XVIe si\u00e8cle, l\u2019art du portrait devient de plus en plus r\u00e9pandu parmi les \u00e9lites florentines qui trouvent l\u00e0 un moyen de porter les traits de leur visage et leur statut social \u00e0 la post\u00e9rit\u00e9.<\/strong> Ils recourent pour cela \u00e0 des figures litt\u00e9raires telles que P\u00e9trarque, \u00e0 des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences musicales ou \u00e0 une mise en sc\u00e8ne riche en symboles pour d\u00e9crire la vie du mod\u00e8le, sous ses multiples facettes.<\/p>\n<p>Le Mus\u00e9e Jacquemart-Andr\u00e9 consacre une exposition in\u00e9dite aux grands portraitistes florentins du XVIe si\u00e8cle autour d\u2019une quarantaine d\u2019\u0153uvres. Viennent ensuite les portraits de cour, qui se distinguent par leur richesse et leur \u00e9l\u00e9gance, et les portraits d\u2019artistes, t\u00e9moins du r\u00f4le nouveau que s\u2019attribuent les peintres de cour, s\u2019ouvrant \u00e0 d\u2019autres formes d\u2019art comme la po\u00e9sie et la musique.<\/p>\n<p>Le parcour de l&rsquo;exposition<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>De l&rsquo;aust\u00e9rit\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge d&rsquo;or du portrait<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avec la mort pr\u00e9matur\u00e9e de Laurent le Magnifique, le 4 avril 1492, une page de <strong>l\u2019histoire de Florence et des M\u00e9dicis se tourne<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pour ces marchands \u00e0 qui la chance a apport\u00e9 argent et pouvoir pendant plus d\u2019un si\u00e8cle, les d\u00e9cennies 1490-1510 seront noires. Pierre, fils du Magnifique fuit la ville en 1494 et Savonarole s\u2019empare du pouvoir. Les M\u00e9dicis ne seront autoris\u00e9s \u00e0 revenir qu\u2019en 1512.<\/p>\n<p>Florence est en pleine mutation politique et culturelle. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, les jeunes artistes repr\u00e9sentent leurs mod\u00e8les sur un fond uni ou devant un paysage, telle la Dame au voile de Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio. En mai 1540, la famille s\u2019installe au Palazzo Vecchio, et les premiers travaux sont effectu\u00e9s dans l\u2019appartement de la duchesse. Concepteur du nouveau langage pictural du duch\u00e9, Bronzino est l\u2019artiste phare de la cour ; il est partie prenante de l\u2019\u00e9volution des codes de repr\u00e9sentation \u00e0 l\u2019oeuvre dans les effigies du duc, totalement d\u00e9militaris\u00e9es \u00e0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1560, \u00e0 l\u2019image de son Cosme de M\u00e9dicis \u00e0 40 ans (Newark, Delaware, The Alana Collection) r\u00e9cemment red\u00e9couvert. <strong>Une telle \u00e9volution fait \u00e9cho \u00e0 la consolidation du r\u00e9gime m\u00e9dic\u00e9en<\/strong> promu au rang de grandduch\u00e9 de Toscane en 1569.<\/p>\n<p>Collectionneur avis\u00e9, Cosme Ier se passionne surtout pour les projets monumentaux. Baccio Bandinelli est son artiste de pr\u00e9dilection. Rien n\u2019est laiss\u00e9 au hasard, ni la composition, la disposition et le cadrage du mod\u00e8le, ni sa posture, son expression \u2013 ou plut\u00f4t son absence d\u2019expression \u2013, ni encore ses costumes et accessoires.<\/p>\n<p>Chaque d\u00e9tail rivalise de luxe et de raffinement sans cependant outrepasser les privil\u00e8ges princiers. La finalit\u00e9 de tels portraits d\u2019apparat \u00e0 la facture naturaliste est autant de retranscrire la physionomie et le caract\u00e8re des mod\u00e8les que d\u2019afficher leur statut social, parfois jusqu\u2019en pr\u00e9cisant leur rang au sein d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de cour strictement hi\u00e9rarchis\u00e9e. Ce qui se joue dans ces portraits, c\u2019est l\u2019essor de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de cour grand-ducale et l\u2019affirmation de la noblesse de ceux qui la composent. Le portrait d\u2019\u00c9tat est\u00a0strictement codifi\u00e9 en termes rituels et r\u00e9p\u00e9titifs, insistant surtout sur les insignes du rang. Costumes, coiffures, et accessoires sont autant d\u2019armures n\u00e9cessaires pour endurer les batailles feutr\u00e9es mais n\u00e9anmoins cruelles de la diplomatie internationale. Par ailleurs, deux tendances se dessinent dans les effigies des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cades. D\u2019une part l\u2019affirmation du langage all\u00e9gorique, et d\u2019autre part le retour \u00e0 une certaine simplicit\u00e9 dans la repr\u00e9sentation des mod\u00e8les et de leurs sentiments, \u00e0 la faveur d\u2019un certain<strong>naturalisme<\/strong>. C\u2019est particuli\u00e8rement vrai dans les portraits d\u2019enfants, dont les Tito p\u00e8re et fils se font une sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9. Enfin, l\u2019art du portrait continue \u00e0 se diffuser, y compris aupr\u00e8s de la bourgeoisie et de familles plus modestes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Les hommes en armes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Au terme d\u2019une terrible ann\u00e9e de si\u00e8ge, <strong>Alexandre de M\u00e9dicis r\u00e9cup\u00e8re l\u2019administration de Florence<\/strong>, qui capitule \u00e0 contrecoeur, en ao\u00fbt 1530. Mais il sera sauvagement assassin\u00e9 sept ans plus tard. En d\u00e9coule une s\u00e9rie de portraits h\u00e9ro\u00efques, en armure, v\u00e9ritables instruments politiques de propagande qui affichent sa r\u00e9cente prise de pouvoir, \u00e0 l\u2019image du Portrait d\u2019Alexandre de M\u00e9dicis devant la ville de Florence de Vasari (Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi). Cosme Ier con\u00e7oit lui aussi une habile politique de l\u00e9gitimation dans laquelle il cultive non seulement sa propre image, mais \u00e9galement celle de son p\u00e8re, Jean dit des Bandes Noires. C\u00e9l\u00e8bre chef de guerre dont il fait un second pater patriae apr\u00e8s Cosme l\u2019Ancien et dont il commande toute une s\u00e9rie de portraits, notamment \u00e0 Francesco Salviati (Florence, Galleria Palatina). <strong>Les M\u00e9dicis ne reculent devant rien et n\u2019h\u00e9sitent jamais \u00e0 s\u2019imposer par la force !<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Les h\u00e9ritiers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contrairement \u00e0 son p\u00e8re Cosme Ier qui a le go\u00fbt du monumental, Fran\u00e7ois Ier pr\u00e9f\u00e8re les oeuvres raffin\u00e9es et les arts d\u00e9coratifs, peut-\u00eatre du fait de son \u00e9ducation soign\u00e9e, m\u00ealant sciences, arts et lettres. Bronzino tient toujours le haut du pav\u00e9 comme l\u2019atteste l\u2019\u00e9tonnante s\u00e9rie de vingt-neuf petites effigies familiales qu\u2019il peint sur \u00e9tain dans les ann\u00e9es 1550 pour orner le bureau de Cosme Ier. Plus pr\u00e9cieux que jamais, les portraits se d\u00e9clinent dans des mat\u00e9riaux co\u00fbteux : or, argent, lapis-lazuli et autres pierres pr\u00e9cieuses, affichant une dimension somptuaire grandissante, doubl\u00e9e d\u2019un soin attentif aux d\u00e9tails et au rendu des textures. Un tel raffinement est aussi souvent <strong>synonyme de miniaturisation<\/strong>, induisant parfois des performances techniques. Rien n\u2019est trop beau pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer le prince.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Po\u00e9sie et musique<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>M\u00e9c\u00e8ne avis\u00e9, Cosme Ier de M\u00e9dicis n\u2019a pas manqu\u00e9 de soutenir la toute <strong>jeune Acad\u00e9mie florentine des belles lettres<\/strong>, d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 la langue toscane. De m\u00eame, il contribue \u00e0 fonder avec Vasari l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie des arts du dessin. Au-del\u00e0 du cadre strict de ces acad\u00e9mies, les artistes se retrouvent au sein de compagnies la\u00efques dites \u00ab de plaisir \u00bb d\u00e9volues au divertissement et aux joutes artistiques.
