{"id":3084,"date":"2015-03-05T17:32:11","date_gmt":"2015-03-05T16:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.proantic.com\/magazine\/?p=3084"},"modified":"2017-01-04T09:54:10","modified_gmt":"2017-01-04T08:54:10","slug":"louis-majorelle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.proantic.com\/magazine\/louis-majorelle\/","title":{"rendered":"Louis Majorelle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Louis Majorelle, l&rsquo;un des fondateurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9cole de Nancy, s&rsquo;illustra dans les arts d\u00e9coratifs, dans la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XXe si\u00e8cle, depuis les pr\u00e9mices de l&rsquo;Art nouveau jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 celles de la modernit\u00e9 des ann\u00e9es 30<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Tout commence en effet en 1860. Rue des Dominicains, Auguste Majorelle (1825-1879), ouvre un commerce de meubles et d&rsquo;objets d&rsquo;art, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans la fa\u00efence puis la d\u00e9coration de mobilier dans le style japonais et la copie de style. Il conna\u00eet le succ\u00e8s, obtenant notamment la m\u00e9daille d&rsquo;argent \u00e0 l&rsquo;Exposition universelle de Paris en 1878. Son fils Louis, l&rsquo;a\u00een\u00e9 de ses huit enfants, est n\u00e9 en 1859. Voulant embrasser une carri\u00e8re artistique, il part pour les Beaux-arts \u00e0 Paris en 1877. Mais la mort d&rsquo;Auguste deux ans plus tard, l&rsquo;oblige \u00e0 reprendre l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 familiale, qui compte une\u00a0vingtaine d&rsquo;ouvriers, avec sa m\u00e8re et son fr\u00e8re. Dans le m\u00eame temps, il poursuit une production industrielle de copies de style. Avec l\u2019aide de Jules Majorelle, l\u2019entreprise amorce la conqu\u00eate des march\u00e9s parisiens et internationaux. D\u00e8s 1904, elle dispose d\u2019un magasin de vente \u00e0 Paris rue de Provence (l\u2019ancien magasin de Samuel Bing), tandis que des succursales sont implant\u00e9es \u00e0 Londres, Berlin, Lyon, Lille ou m\u00eame Oran.<\/p>\n<p>Aux premiers essais dans la filiation directe des grands succ\u00e8s de Gall\u00e9 tels la table \u00ab La Source \u00bb, se substitue peu \u00e0 peu un mobilier au d\u00e9cor naturaliste et aux formes fluides et in\u00e9dites. La recherche de la beaut\u00e9 de la ligne, qui se fait aux d\u00e9pends de la marqueterie notamment, accompagne une r\u00e9flexion sur un mobilier qui doit servir au quotidien, o\u00f9 la forme l\u2019emporte sur le dessin.<\/p>\n<p>Majorelle prend ses distances avec les principes esth\u00e9tiques naturalistes de l\u2019Ecole de Nancy et regarde vers des exp\u00e9riences plus modernistes, comme celle de Henri Van de Velde, en Belgique. Le public et la critique adh\u00e8rent sans r\u00e9serve \u00e0 cette orientation et font na\u00eetre le \u00ab ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne Majorelle \u00bb. Les commandes de maisons de haute couture, caf\u00e9s parisiens, riches industriels, grands magasins ou ambassades assurent \u00e0 l\u2019entreprise un succ\u00e8s et une reconnaissance durable. On y retrouve la m\u00eame \u00e9l\u00e9gance que celle qui r\u00e9gnait dans sa production ant\u00e9rieure, mais les pr\u00e9occupations industrielles ont d\u00e9finitivement emport\u00e9 la mise, avec une incroyable facilit\u00e9 d\u2019adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>Louis Majorelle n\u2019est pas uniquement un \u00e9b\u00e9niste mais aussi un artiste d\u00e9corateur dont l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat ne se limite pas \u00e0 une seule technique. Comme d\u2019autres membres de l\u2019Ecole de Nancy, il explore d\u2019autres domaines de cr\u00e9ation :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>la c\u00e9ramique, en collaboration soit avec Keller et Gu\u00e9rin, pour des petits objets et bibelots d\u00e9coratifs, soit avec Rambervillers, pour des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de d\u00e9cor architectural (frise, carreaux).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9o_HivgPVpA\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9b\u00e9nisterie, l\u2019atelier de ferronnerie prend \u00e0 partir de 1898 une ampleur nouvelle. Plaques de propret\u00e9s, serrures, ferronneries architecturales mais surtout applications de bronze sur les meubles \u00e9pousent la structure avec une coh\u00e9sion parfaite et une \u00e9l\u00e9gance in\u00e9gal\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00e8s 1902, Majorelle travaille avec Daum pour des verreries cloisonn\u00e9es \u00e0 la production de luminaires associant le robuste fer forg\u00e9 au verre fragile. Cette collaboration se poursuit apr\u00e8s la Premi\u00e8re Guerre Mondiale avec la conception de vases souffl\u00e9s dans le style Art d\u00e9co. Alfred L\u00e9vy, son collaborateur, prend la suite, toujours aid\u00e9 par Jules Majorelle, puis par le fils de ce dernier. Les collaborations prestigieuses se poursuivent comme avec Paul Beucher ou encore Jean Prouv\u00e9&#8230; Faire appel \u00e0 la Maison Majorelle est toujours gage de qualit\u00e9. L&rsquo;am\u00e9nagement des appartements et cabines du Paquebot Normandie leur sera ainsi confi\u00e9 en 1935. Mais la deuxi\u00e8me guerre passe par l\u00e0, le d\u00e9clin s&rsquo;annonce, face \u00ab\u00a0aux difficiles ann\u00e9es de la reconstruction\u00a0\u00bb.
