Tout d\u2019abord objet de copie, puis dans l\u2019ombre de Michel-Ange, l\u2019antique finit par incarner la part lumineuse et heureuse de l\u2019\u0153uvre du sculpteur et devint le symbole de la nature et de la vie qu\u2019il cherchait \u00e0 saisir dans sa sculpture et son dessin. Il acheta aupr\u00e8s des antiquaires parisiens, entre 1893 et 1917, des centaines de fragments grecs, hell\u00e9nistiques, \u00e9trusques ou romains, en marbre et en bronze, ainsi que des vases et autres figurines en terre cuite.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab L\u2019antique est ma jeunesse \u00bb d\u00e9clarait Rodin, signifiant par l\u00e0 m\u00eame que sa passion pour l\u2019antique \u00e9tait une grande source d\u2019inspiration. Harlingue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Vers L\u2019Homme qui marche ou la recherche sur le corps masculin<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">C\u2019est en regardant quelques c\u00e9l\u00e8bres mod\u00e8les de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 et de la Renaissance que Rodin explore la repr\u00e9sentation du corps masculin. Dans le mus\u00e9e imaginaire de l\u2019artiste, le sculpteur grec Phidias rivalise avec Michel-Ange. Rodin emprunte tout d\u2019abord la composition de l\u2019antique <em>Torse du Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re<\/em> pour r\u00e9aliser sa statue du <em>Penseur<\/em>. Il en retient aussi la le\u00e7on du fragment, aussi fort et complet que la figure enti\u00e8re, qu\u2019il illustre dans ses \u0153uvres\u00a0partielles, le <em>Torse de l\u2019\u00c9tude de Saint Jean-Baptiste<\/em> puis <em>L\u2019Homme qui marche<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00ab\u00a0Voici des statues ab\u00eem\u00e9es, trouv\u00e9es dans des ruines ; et parce qu\u2019elles sont incompl\u00e8tes, ne sont-elles plus des chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre.\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9crivit l\u2019artiste en 1907. Photo : Christian Baraja<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">La Naissance de V\u00e9nus ou l\u2019expression de la figure f\u00e9minine<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A partir des ann\u00e9es 1890, Rodin \u0153uvre \u00e0 faire \u00e9merger sa nouvelle V\u00e9nus, \u00e0 travers plusieurs repr\u00e9sentations f\u00e9minines, toutes saisies dans l\u2019atelier, d\u2019apr\u00e8s le mod\u00e8le vivant. Mais le sculpteur n\u2019ignore rien des mod\u00e8les antiques. Apr\u00e8s s\u2019\u00eatre inspir\u00e9 du type de la V\u00e9nus accroupie, qui impr\u00e8gne ses figures f\u00e9minines des ann\u00e9es 1880, il se tourne vers la <em>V\u00e9nus de Milo<\/em> qui impose sa pr\u00e9sence, en filigrane, dans les ann\u00e9es 1890-1900, \u00e0 travers la <em>M\u00e9ditation <\/em>puis la <em>Muse Whistler<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">L\u2019antique <em>V\u00e9nus d\u2019Esquilin<\/em> incarne la qu\u00eate de pl\u00e9nitude que l\u2019on retrouve dans les \u0153uvres tardives de l\u2019artiste, comme l\u2019<em>Aphrodite<\/em>, le <em>Torse de jeune femme cambr\u00e9e<\/em> ou la <em>Pri\u00e8re<\/em>. L\u2019objet du pass\u00e9 change de statut pour se confondre avec l\u2019\u0153uvre, r\u00e9unis tous deux dans un m\u00eame espace-temps. Le mat\u00e9riau antique en terre cuite, ou sa reproduction en pl\u00e2tre, accueille dans sa forme des figures de Rodin pr\u00e9-existantes, pour la plupart issues de la <em>Porte de l\u2019Enfer<\/em>, telles des \u00ab\u00a0fleurs dans un vase\u00a0\u00bb (selon l\u2019expression de Rainer Maria Rilke).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ces maquettes peuvent \u00eatre ensuite traduites en marbre ou en bronze. Le mus\u00e9e du Louvre ou les recueils de gravures de la Biblioth\u00e8que imp\u00e9riale sont ses premi\u00e8res sources d\u2019inspiration. D\u00e8s son voyage en Italie, \u00e0 l\u2019hiver 1875-1876, devant les chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre de Michel-Ange et de l\u2019Antique, son trait se fait plus libre vis-\u00e0-vis du sujet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sur les dessins plus tardifs, peu avant 1900, l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 n\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus un sujet en soi mais r\u00e9appara\u00eet, sous forme d\u2019annotations \u00e0 caract\u00e8re mythologique, pour qualifier l\u2019attitude d\u2019un personnage, saisi d\u2019apr\u00e8s mod\u00e8le vivant, dans le secret de l\u2019atelier. A partir du portrait de Mrs Marianna Russell, dont le caract\u00e8re antique l\u2019a frapp\u00e9, Rodin d\u00e9rive vers des versions mythologiques, coiff\u00e9es d\u2019attributs iconographiques, <em>Pallas au Parth\u00e9non<\/em> ou <em>Bacchus indien<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">La t\u00eate de <em>Minerve sans casque<\/em>, enfin d\u00e9barras\u00e9e de tout accessoire, appara\u00eet, en miroir de la <em>T\u00eate Warren<\/em>, comme un fragment antique.
