A\u00a027 ans, il gagne le prix de Rome. Il voyage d\u2019ailleurs \u00e0 travers l\u2019Italie. Rome est pour Carpeaux une source de multiples r\u00e9v\u00e9lations, Michel-Ange avant tout, auquel il voue imm\u00e9diatement un culte absolu dont il ne se d\u00e9partira pas tout au long de sa carri\u00e8re. contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 asseoir sa r\u00e9putation, m\u00eame si \u00e9videmment comme beaucoup de g\u00e9nies artistiques, il n\u2019a pas \u00e9chapp\u00e9 \u00e0 la critique, certains \u00e9tait brillamment romantique et exprimait donc tour \u00e0 tour une part d\u2019ombre et une part de lumi\u00e8re.\u00a0Le sculpteur du sourire, le peintre du mouvement, le portraitiste remarquable, le dessinateur familier de la cour des Tuileries, l&rsquo;observateur attentif de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 de la rue, est aussi un admirateur sensible de Michel-Ange qui s&rsquo;ab\u00eeme sans cesse dans une sombre m\u00e9lancolie, brossant \u00e0 grands traits, d\u00e8s ses d\u00e9buts, la trag\u00e9die anthropophage d&rsquo;Ugolin ( Une de ses r\u00e9alisations les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres est\u00a0 la sculpture d\u2019Ugolin et de ses enfants r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 1861 et inspir\u00e9 de la Divine Com\u00e9die de Dante) et, plus tard, les fulgurances fantomatiques d&rsquo;un sentiment religieux empreint d&rsquo;inqui\u00e9tude, la violence de sc\u00e8nes de naufrages ou des autoportraits douloureux.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2063\"
