Cette exposition retrace l\u2019histoire de la repr\u00e9sentation de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 dans les arts et entend rendre hommage \u00e0 une facette m\u00e9connue des collections du mus\u00e9e, ainsi qu\u2019au go\u00fbt de Jules et Paul Marmottan pour ce genre pictural.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le terme trompe-l\u2019\u0153il aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 employ\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois par Louis L\u00e9opold Boilly (1761-1845) en l\u00e9gende d\u2019une \u0153uvre expos\u00e9e au Salon de 1800. Le terme fut adopt\u00e9 trente-cinq ans plus tard par l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise. Bien que le terme apparaisse au XIXe si\u00e8cle, l\u2019origine du trompe-l\u2019\u0153il serait li\u00e9e \u00e0 un r\u00e9cit bien plus ancien, celui de Pline l\u2019Ancien (c.23-79 apr. J.C), qui rapporte dans son Histoire naturelle comment le peintre Zeuxis (464-398 av. Il joue avec le regard du spectateur et constitue un clin d\u2019\u0153il aux pi\u00e8ges que nous tendent nos propres perceptions. Si certains th\u00e8mes du trompe-l\u2019\u0153il sont connus \u2013 tels que les vanit\u00e9s, les troph\u00e9es de chasse, les porte-lettres ou les grisailles \u2013 d\u2019autres aspects seront abord\u00e9s dans cette exposition, comme les d\u00e9clinaisons d\u00e9coratives (mobilier, fa\u00efences, \u2026) ou encore la port\u00e9e politique de ce genre pictural \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque moyen privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 de repr\u00e9senter, d\u2019imiter la nature. C\u2019est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment le d\u00e9fi que se lanc\u00e8rent Zeuxis et ses raisins et Parrhasios qui dupe son rival avec un rideau peint (Ve et IVe si\u00e8cles avant J-C). Ces motifs cristallisent les questions de l\u2019abolition des fronti\u00e8res entre art et r\u00e9alit\u00e9, la part de l\u2019art et celle de l\u2019invention, que vont se poser apr\u00e8s eux plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d\u2019artistes.<br>Si la p\u00e9riode m\u00e9di\u00e9vale se pr\u00e9occupe peu de ces jeux d\u2019optique, ils r\u00e9apparaissent \u00e0 la Renaissance. Les recherches sur la perspective am\u00e8nent certains artistes \u00e0 concevoir de v\u00e9ritables d\u00e9cors en trompe-l\u2019\u0153il comme la marqueterie d\u2019armoires feintes du<br>Studiolo du palais ducal d\u2019Urbin (1473-1476). \u00c0 partir du d\u00e9but du XVIe si\u00e8cle, la figuration illusionniste d\u2019objets du quotidien devenant le sujet principal d\u2019un tableau de chevalet, se multiplie et s\u00e9duit collectionneurs et amateurs. La Nature-morte aux bouteilles et aux livres (vers 1520-30, Colmar, mus\u00e9e d\u2019Unterlinden) constitue un exemple significatif d\u2019une des plus anciennes natures mortes trompe-l\u2019\u0153il connues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le XVIIe si\u00e8cle voit aux Pays-Bas l\u2019apog\u00e9e de ces recherches men\u00e9es par les artistes. Avec des moyens purement techniques et plastiques, la peinture \u00e0 l\u2019huile, la perspective, les effets de lumi\u00e8re, l\u2019artiste ambitionne de rivaliser avec la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Parmi les portraits en troph\u00e9es de chasse, gibiers et volatiles sont les plus pris\u00e9s et sont souvent issues de commandes. Le roi Louis XV sollicite le pinceau de Jean-Baptiste Oudry, peintre du roi, pour immortaliser ses prouesses \u00e0 la chasse \u00e0 courre. L\u2019artiste joint aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des animaux un cartellino, petit papier froiss\u00e9 relatant le titre de l\u2019\u0153uvre et la date de la chasse. L\u2019artiste y d\u00e9montrait sa virtuosit\u00e9 et pouvait aussi apposer sa signature, la date de l\u2019\u0153uvre ou le nom de son commanditaire sur l\u2019un des documents pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 sur ces portes-lettres. Au-del\u00e0 de la technicit\u00e9 de ces compositions permettant de lire les documents imit\u00e9s, les artistes pouvaient y dissimuler, tel un r\u00e9bus, certains messages plus ou moins explicites selon son destinataire et que le spectateur se pla\u00eet \u00e0 reconstituer. Le peintre Dominique Doncre, sp\u00e9cialiste du trompe-l\u2019\u0153il et de la grisaille, \u00e9tabli d\u00e8s 1770, \u00e0 Arras, o\u00f9 il effectue l\u2019essentiel de sa carri\u00e8re, est l\u2019un des artistes les plus repr\u00e9sentatifs dans ce domaine. Paul Marmottan a \u00e9crit et collectionn\u00e9 les \u0153uvres de cet artiste dont nous exposons ici certaines peintures provenant du mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts d\u2019Arras dont une issue de la collection de Paul Marmottan. Cela \u00e9volue au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, des th\u00e9matiques nouvelles apparaissent au gr\u00e9 des nouvelles techniques apparaissant dont la porcelaine dure. Soupi\u00e8res en forme de choux, de salades, de courges, assiettes garnies d\u2019olives et autres fruits et l\u00e9gumes ou terrines de forme animali\u00e8re d\u00e9corent les tables d\u2019apparat aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de plats aux formes plus conventionnelles, source de confusion pour les convives. Le trompel\u2019\u0153il s\u2019autonomise entre le XVIIe si\u00e8cle et le milieu du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Ce go\u00fbt se diffuse largement, tout d\u2019abord en Allemagne (Meissen) puis dans toute l\u2019Europe dont la France, ce dont t\u00e9moigne les nombreuses manufactures qui sont cr\u00e9\u00e9es (Sceaux, Niderviller).
